The University at Albany Department of Music is pleased to present artists from the Michael Clement Professional Vocal Studio as part of the new Bel Canto series spotlighting Capital Region vocal artists. Soprano Catherine Mazzone and tenor Angelo Mazzone will be featured on Sunday, November 1, 2009 at 4pm in the Recital Hall of the UAlbany Performing Arts Center on the uptown campus.  At the piano for the performance will be local accompanist and vocal coach Michael Clement.

 

The soprano-tenor duo will offer a program of some great moments in opera and a variety of classics from the concert repertoire.  Several composers famous chiefly for their stage works also created smaller-scaled gems which will be featured in this performance including selections from Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder as well as songs by Bellini and Verdi. 

 

Catherine Mazzone is a native of Glasgow, Scotland.  She was previously a student at the Mannes College of Music where she sang the role of Pamina in Mozart’s Die Zauberflőte before being invited to become a young artist at the prestigious Juilliard Opera Center in New York.  Previous engagements have included covering the role of Medora in Il Corsaro at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden as part of their annual Verdi Festival, performing the role of Isaura in Verdi’s Jerusalem for the Opera Orchestra of New York and also taking part in their tribute to Giuditta Pasta. In 2001, Catherine made her Sarasota Opera debut singing the Sandman in Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel and understudied the roles of Alice in Falstaff by Verdi, Leonora in Oberto Conte di San Bonifacio Verdi’s first opera and the Soprano in the Verdi Requiem. She made her European debut as Agathe in Weber’s Der Freischűtz at the Zwingenberg Schlossfestspiele. 

 

Angelo Mazzone is a graduate of the Crane School of Music receiving a degree in French Horn Performance and Music Education.  He began his Vocal training in Sienna, Italy, with tenor Steffano Algieri.  Upon his return to the United States, his pursuit of a career in opera began working with such companies as Sarasota Opera, Tri Cities Opera and Opera Excelsior. Angelo was featured in a sacred music concert at St. Thomas’s Cathedral in Glasgow, Scotland.  His voice has graced the Caramoor Opera Festival, as well as the International Vocal Arts Institute in San Juan Puerto Rico.   Angelo made his New York City debut with the West Side Opera Society singing the role of Roberto in Donizetti’s opera Roberto Devereux.  Mr. Mazzone has recently worked with Opera Exposures delighting audiences with opera aria and duets by Verdi, Puccini and Donizetti.  Angelo has recently returned from Augusta, Sicily having the great honor of working with Marcello Giordani, world renowned tenor.  In Sicily, Mr. Mazzone was the first recipient of the Marcello Giordani Vocal Competition. 

 

Vocal coach/pianist Michael Clement is a frequent performer in chamber music concert series throughout the Northeast.  He received his education from the Eastman School of Music, the Chautauqua Institute, the University of Arizona, and the University of Southern California.  As a student in Tucson, he was engaged as the pianist for the Tucson Symphony and the Arizona Opera.  After relocating to southern California, his musical activities centered on the world of opera and vocal accompanying filling positions at the Long Beach Opera, Orange County Opera and as director of the Opera Workshop at California State University at Long Beach.  He has also served as pianist and coach for the Florentine Opera of Milwaukee.

 

Upcoming performers featured in the Bel Canto series during the 2009-10 season will be soprano Emalie Savoy, Capital Opera and other young professional singers of Michael Clement’s studio.
