The University at Albany Department of Music is pleased to present soprano Julie Norman as the first artist featured in the new Bel Canto series spotlighting Capital Region vocal artists at the UAlbany Performing Arts Center on the uptown campus.

 

Ms. Norman will present a concert of works from the song and operatic repertory on Thursday, October 8, 2009 at 7pm.  She will be accompanied by her mother, pianist Starr Norman.  Ms. Norman will also participate in The Singer’s Life, an informal talk conducted in an “Inside the Actors Studio” inspired format, on Friday, October 9, 2009 at 3pm. UAlbany’s voice coach Frances Wittmann will host the interview which will focus on the young singer’s life, achievements and career goals.  Both events will take place in the Recital Hall.

 

Ms. Norman is a recent graduate of the Master’s of Music program from the Eastman School of Music with a degree in Voice Performance. In her time at Eastman, she enjoyed such roles as Flora in The Turn of the Screw by Benjamin Britten, Susanna in the Eastman Theatre spring 2009 production of Le Nozze di Figaro by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Cunegonda in the Opera Scenes performance of Candide by Leonard Bernstein and Frasquita in the Opera Scenes performance of Carmen by Bizet.  Ms. Norman was a finalist in the 2008 Friends of Eastman Opera competition and placed third in the 2009 Jessye Kneisel German Lieder competition. Recently, she was seen as the principal soloist in the Euroculture Opera Festival in Auvergne, France where she also performed as the title role in The Fairy Queen by Henry Purcell. She was the first place winner of the New Jersey N.A.T.S competition in 2006 and was a member of the Westminster Choir for 4 years with which she performed on stage with Nicole Cabelle and in concert with Jennifer Larmore, the New York Philharmonic and the Philadelphia Orchestra. Additionally, with the Westminster Choir, she performed in the Spoleto USA festival for three years and under the batons of Charles Dutoit, Lorin Maazel and as a soloist under Joseph Flummerfelt. Ms. Norman now continues her vocal training with Rita Shane in Manhattan.

 

Other performers featured in the Bel Canto series during the 2009-10 season will be soprano Emalie Savoy, Capital Opera and the young professional singers of accompanist/coach Michael Clement.
