The University at
Albany Department of Music is pleased to present the Bob Gluck-Joe Giardullo Duo on Thursday, November 19, 2009 at 7pm in the Recital Hall
of the Performing Arts Center on
the uptown campus. Soprano saxophonist Giardullo and pianist/UAlbany
faculty member Gluck will present a program of duet improvisations. Both instrumentalists bring to bear many
traditions of jazz and creative concert music. Their virtuosic and exploratory
work bridges a diversity of styles, forms, textures and colors.
Giardullo’s music encompasses
a broad scope of avant jazz and new music. All
About Jazz Los Angeles describes his work as "creativity fresh as a
breaking wave." All Music Guide calls Giardullo
"startlingly impressive.” He
has performed throughout the US, Canada and Europe, solo and with artists
Pauline Oliveros, Stuart Dempster, The Deep Listening Band, Joe McPhee, Steve
Lacy, Carlos Zingaro, Milford Graves, Bill Dixon, Marilyn Crispell, Vinny
Golia, Bobby Bradford, Thomas Buckner and Lori Freedman.
Gluck’s
performances span jazz, free improvisation, avant-garde concert music and works
for electronically expanded acoustical instruments. Erik Lawrence of Chronogram describes him as “an
accomplished and passionate pianist in the most elusive tradition of
avant-garde masters Cecil Taylor, Andrew Hill, McCoy Tyner, and Don Pullen.”
His two current jazz ensembles include The Bob Gluck Trio (with bassist Michael
Bisio and drummer Dean Sharp) and The Synapse Brothers (with guitarist John
Myers and sound designer Patrick Gleeson).
Tickets are $8 for the general public and $4 for students, seniors & UAlbany faculty/staff and may be purchased through the Performing Arts Center Box Office. For further information, contact the Box Office at (518) 442-3997 or visit the Performing Arts Center website at www.albany.edu/pac.
