The University at Albany Department of Music is pleased to present faculty emeritus Findlay Cockrell in program entitled 33 Variations on Thursday, September 10, 2009 and Saturday, September 12, 2009 both at 7pm in the Recital Hall of the Performing Arts Center on the uptown campus.

The recent Jane Fonda Broadway play of the same name is the inspiration for Cockrell’s first recital this season. The program will include the 50-minute Beethoven work, 33 Variations on a Waltz by A. Diabell,.  It will be preceded by a performance of one of the earliest published pieces by the composer, the Piano Sonata (also in C Major) Opus 2/3.  With these selections, the audience will be treated to the vast difference between two works written and published approximately 30 years apart. Cockrell's long history with the Variations includes the performance of it on his San Francisco debut recital, over 50 years ago.

Cockrell was a scholarship student at Harvard College and the Juilliard School of Music, where he received Bachelor and Master's degrees in piano and was a student of the late Edward Steuermann.   He gave his New York debut in 1965 under the sponsorship of Concert Artists Guild and Town Hall. On the faculty of UAlbany from 1966 until 2006, he was an Associate Professor of Music and a Collins Fellow.  In addition to numerous solo recitals, Cockrell has appeared as concerto soloist with orchestras throughout the U.S., including the San Francisco Symphony, the Albany Symphony, the Schenectady Symphony, the Jackson (Michigan) Symphony and the Plymouth (Massachusetts) Symphony.

Cockrell begins his 4th year of retirement from UAlbany this season.  He continues to perform and teach privately in Albany as well as performing at his other homes, the outdoor Amphitheatre at Conn Ranch in California's Napa Valley and at The Frank Collymore Hall in Barbados

Tickets are $8 for the general public and $4 for students, seniors & UAlbany faculty/staff and may be purchased through the Performing Arts Center Box Office.  For further information, contact the Box Office at (518) 442-3997 or visit the Performing Arts Center website at www.albany.edu/pac.
