The University at Albany
Department of Music is pleased to present Cesar
Reyes on Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at 7pm in
the Recital Hall of the Performing Arts Center on the uptown campus. This gifted young artist from Mexico
will perform piano masterworks of 20th century Mexican nationalism by Manuel M.
Ponce, Miguel Bernal Jiménez, José Pablo Moncayo and Euduardo Hernández Moncada
and will discuss each work as a portrayal of Mexican character.
Mexican nationalism began in
the first two decades of the 20th century and moved into an indigenous
nationalistic phase until the 1960s. Four of the major works of Mexican classical
repertoire date back to this period and, even though obtained through different
compositional devices, all four look towards creating a nationalistic depiction
of the Mexican.
Born in Michoacán,
Mexico, Reyes graduated from
the National Conservatory of Music in Mexico
City as a concert pianist. He was winner of the
Conservatory's most important performance competitions for three consecutive
years. He has not only appeared in the main concert halls of his country such
as the Sala Manuel M. Ponce of the Fine Arts Palace and at the National Center
for the Arts, but also in outdoor spaces and community churches in indigenous
villages of his home state. As an advocate of Mexican music, he has presented
lectures at music festivals and conservatories in the United States and Switzerland
on the folk music and piano repertory of his country, including the Society for
American Music national conference at San
Antonio, Texas.
In 2001 he came to the United
States to study under the direction of
renowned Professor Germán Diez, disciple and assistant of Claudio Arrau.
Tickets are $10 for the general
