The University at Albany Department of Music is pleased to present Capital Opera in a concert production of Le nozze di Figaro on Friday, April 3, 2009 at 7:30pm in the Recital Hall of the Performing Arts Center on the uptown campus.  Sung in Italian with English supertitles, Mozart's much-loved comic opera will be performed in four acts.

 

Capital Opera’s mission is to provide the Capital Region quality experiences in opera and classical vocal music while providing emerging and developing artists a venue for role study and performance in complete operas.  The company seeks out the best talent available while maintaining a strong commitment to include local artists in concerts and productions. 

 

The production features Roza Tulyaganova, Richard Mazzaferro, Alexina Jones, Ivan Amaro, Kara Cornell, Barbara Eckhaus, Steve Dahlin, Andy Truex and Donna Butler, under the direction of Michael Clement, with Theatre Department faculty member Yvonne Perry as narrator.  The University Chamber Singers will also perform under the direction of David Griggs-Janower. 

 

Tulyaganova is a native of Uzbekistan. She has sung the roles of Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi (Mississippi Opera Co.), Musetta in La Bohème (Cantiamo Opera Theater), Micaëla in Carmen  (The Brooklyn-Queens Conservatory Theater), La Ciesca in Gianni Schicchi (Chelsea Opera), 1st Lady in Die Zauberflöte (Intermezzo Young Artist Program) and Fiordiligi in Così fan Tutte (Hubbard Opera Theater).

 

Mazzaferros roles in opera have included, Guglielmo in Cosi fan tutte, Giorgio Germont and Baron Douphol in La Traviata, Schaunard in La Bohème, the Maestro in Salieri’s Prima la musica, poi le parole, Melchior in Amahl and the Night Visitors, and Uberto in Pergolesi’s La Serva Padrona performed with organizations including Lake George Opera, Hubbard Hall Opera Theater, Schenectady Symphony Orchestra and Glens Falls Symphony Orchestra. 

 

Peruvian born Amaro is an accomplished performer who has many opera roles to his credit including the title roles in Rigoletto, Il Signor Bruschino and Don Pasquale; Giorgio Germont in La Traviata, Don Carlo in La Forza del Destino, Il Conte di Luna in Il Trovatore, Tonio in I Pagliacci, Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor, Count Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro, Don Alfonso in Cosi fan tutte, Figaro and Don Bartolo in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Don Magnifico in La Cenerentola, Marcello in La Boheme, Leporello in Don Giovanni, Papageno in Die Zauberflöte and Pizarro in Fidelio.

 

Jones is a graduate of NYU's Steinhardt School.  She has been heard locally with Lake George Opera, The Chamber Music Forum of the East at Bennington College and at various recitals and competitions throughout southern Vermont and upstate New York.  Jones most recently has founded the Hubbard Hall Opera Theater in an effort to bring more performance opportunities to the talented musicians who live in this area. 

 

Mezzo-soprano Cornell travels the country to perform with opera companies, music festivals, orchestras and recitals. She has been soloist with numerous local organizations including The Octavo Singers, Aeode Consort, Lake George Opera, The Bethlehem Library, Hubbard Hall Opera Theater and most recently with Albany Pro Musica.

 

Eckhaus has appeared on the concert stage with the Glens Falls Symphony, Columbia Festival Orchestra, Albany Symphony Orchestra and the Emory String Quartet.  Her operatic roles include Flora in Traviata, Marcellina in Le Nozze de Figaro, Third Lady in Die Zauberflote, and Bibbianna in Friends of Freedom.

 

As a member of the Opera Colorado Outreach Ensemble, Truex has performed numerous roles including Belmonte in Die Entführung aus dem Serail and Alberto in the world premiere of Richard Xavier Rodriguez’s La Curandera.  He has appeared as a concert soloist with the Boulder Bach Festival, Diverse Passions, the Aurora Symphony Orchestra, the Messiah Choral Society of Grand Junction and the Warsaw Chorale.   

 

Butler is a student at UAlbany.

 

Perry is a working actress with over 15 years of professional experience. She spent five years as “Rosanna” on the CBS soap As The World Turns and has appeared in several sit-coms, evening dramas and independent films. She has an extensive list of commercial clients and is seen locally as the spokeswoman for Taft Furniture and TWTV’s The Real Estate Showcase. Theatre credits include onstage roles with Capital Rep, NYSTI, Oldcastle Theatre Co., Stageworks/Hudson, The Northeast Theatre, Theatre 88 and Theatre 440 at Proctors.
