The University at
Albany Department of Music is pleased to present the Bacchiocchi-Brown Duo on Thursday, February 5, 2009 at 7pm in
the Recital Hall of the Performing Arts Center on the uptown campus. The
renowned flute and guitar duo of Kristin Bacchiocchi-Stewart and Joel Brown will
present works by Giuliani, Castelnovo-Tedesco, Piazzolla and more. The duo has been performing together since
2001 when they premiered Robert Delfausse’s Concerto
Grosso with the Lake Placid Sinfonietta.
Over the past eight years they have appeared in recital halls across the
country, dazzling audiences with their virtuosity and exceptional musical
report.
Kristin Bacchiocchi-Stewart is currently pursuing her DMA in Flute
Performance at The Peabody Conservatory of Music. She is a Faculty Associate at
Peabody and the Flute Professor at Frostburg State University
where she also teaches woodwind methods classes and directs the flute ensemble.
Before moving to Baltimore, Bacchiocchi-Stewart
taught flute, music history and music fundamentals classes for four years at Schenectady County Community College.
She was a prizewinner at the 2002 National Flute Association’s Young Artist
Competition, a winner of the 2000 NFA Master Class Performers Competition, a
participant in the First Beijing Nicolet International Flute Competition and
has appeared as a semi-finalist in the Myrna Brown and Ducrest Young Artist
Competitions. An active performer of contemporary music, Bacchiocchi-Stewart is
also a dedicated chamber musician. She has been a member of TRITONIS (flute,
cello, and guitar) since 2001, when they premiered Concerto Grosso by Robert Delfausse with the Lake Placid
Sinfonietta. She actively concertizes with Joel Brown in their flute and guitar
duo and in a newly formed flute and percussion duo with Michael Zell. She has
played with the Albany Symphony Orchestra, Catskill Symphony and Albany Pro
Musica. She recently played at the Minato Mirai concert hall in Yokohama, Japan.
Bacchiocchi- Stewart’s academic achievements include a M.M. from the University of Cincinnati
College-Conservatory of Music, and a B.M. from Ithaca College.
She has participated in the Aspen Music Festival, the Colorado College Music
Festival and the Zurich 2000 Master Class series.
Joel Brown's
actively eclectic performances as a soloist and chamber musician have included
appearances with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Festival of
Contemporary Music at Tanglewood, the Saratoga Chamber Music Festival, the
Caramoor Festival, and the Killington Festival. Internationally, he has played
at the Barbican in London with soprano Dawn
Upshaw, in British Columbia at the Music in
the Mountains Chamber Music Festival, in the Czech Republic
at the Mikulov Guitar Festival as concerto soloist with the Martinu Chamber
Orchestra. Notable appearances in the United States
include Carnegie Hall with Dawn Upshaw, recitals on both coasts with
mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade, and with the Boston Pops Orchestra. Brown
has also performed on NBC’s Today,
CNN’s Showbiz Today, on NPR, and on
the BBC.
Brown is the
founding member of Tritonis, a flute (Kristin Bacchiocchi-Stewart), cello (Ann
Alton) and guitar trio that has appeared at the Guitar Foundation of America
conference in Miami, at National Flute
Association conventions in New York and Boston, and in
universities and recital halls across the nation. Brown performs regularly as a
member of Chris Brubeck’s Triple Play, a crossover group blending jazz with
blues and folk music. The trio, which is rounded out by harmonica virtuoso
Peter Madcat Ruth, has played in nearly every state of the Union
and has performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival and with the Singapore Chinese
Orchestra.
Brown’s recordings
include Bach to Brubeck (Koch
International) with the London Symphony Orchestra that includes a world premier
recording of J.S. Bach’s prelude BWV 997 arranged for guitar and orchestra by
Chris Brubeck, Chords and Thyme
(Dorian Records) with English guitarist Edward Flower, King’s Court and Celtic Fair (Telarc) with the Empire Brass, and Across Your Dreams (Telarc) with
Frederica von Stade. In 2002, Brown joined Dawn Upshaw, Fredirica von Stade,
Meryl Streep, Chris Brubeck and the late Bill Crofut on Dance on a Moonbeam: A Collection of Songs and Poems
(Telarc). Brown's most recent CD, Christmas
Cedar and Spruce (Albany)
has received rave reviews. Joel Brown is a Senior-Artist-in-Residence at Skidmore College
in Saratoga Springs.
