The University at
Albany Department of Music is pleased to present Richard Albagli & Friends on Saturday, October 4, 2008 at
7:30pm in the Recital Hall of the Performing Arts Center on the uptown campus.
UAlbany faculty
member and percussionist Richard Albagli has invited a few of his friends to
share a special “Thank You” performance.
Appearing on the program with Albagli will be renowned concert pianist
Findlay Cockrell, opera singer/international creativity consultant John Cimino
and longtime percussion colleague John Antonio as well as two of Albagli’s top
percussion students Nicholas Tariello of Guilderland, a veteran of four
previous performances in this series, and Brian Shank of Valatie.
The music will be
wide-ranging from the classical stage to vaudeville, original compositions, works for percussion with and without other instrumentation
and transcriptions for marimba. Among the composers represented are Leonard
Bernstein, J. S. Bach, Ney Rosauro, Jack Behrens, Toru Takemitsu and local
composer Alice Spatz. Two original works by John Cimino and Richard Albagli
(“Song for Susan” and “Song of the Blue Whale”) will be sung by Cimino and
Michael Current’s “Three Epigrams” on a W. H. Auden poem will be performed for
the first time in more than 40 years.
Richard Albagli is the Principal Percussionist of the Albany
Symphony, a faculty member at both the University at
Findlay Cockrell was on the faculty of UAlbany from 1966 until 2006. In
