The University at Albany Department of Theatre is pleased to present Picasso at the Lapin Agile as its third offering of the 2007-08 season.  The production will run for eight performances in the Main Theatre at the University at Albany Performing Arts Center on the uptown campus from March 7 - 15, 2008.

In this wildly funny play by acclaimed comedian, actor and playwright Steve Martin, Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein - both young, ambitious and knowing that they are on to something big - meet in a local pub where they encounter a host of quirky characters who are on their own personal journeys.  Picasso and Einstein indulge in a bout of dueling egos over whose truth is the real truth - art or science - and who will have the greatest impact on the next century.  According to Martin, the play “. . . is uplifting because it speaks well of the creative process in both art and science.  There is kinship in the creative spirit."

The production is directed by faculty adjunct Laura Margolis.  Margolis is the founder and Artistic Director of Stageworks/Hudson, a Hudson Valley Equity theater company. Her directing credits for Stageworks include Dog Stories (world premiere), Omnium Gatherum, Lebensraum, The Drawer Boy, Brutal Imagination, The Laramie Project, Wit, A Wedding Story (American premiere) and numerous one-act premieres for the annual Play by Play festival. Margolis received the Certificate of Recognition from the Columbia County Board of Supervisors for providing original and creative opportunities to the community and the Columbia County Arts Award for “excellence in developing and fostering the arts in Columbia County.”

About the production, Margolis states,Just like the customers at the bar, The Lapin Agile, the cast for the UAlbany production is a broad mix of people.  We have actors who were born in the US, obviously, and actors who were born in Ukraine, Burumbi and Korea.  In addition to this, we have an actor of Puerto Rican ancestry and another of Korean ancestry.  Three of the actors are from right here in the Capital District.”
