The University at Albany Department of Music is pleased to present the University Percussion Ensemble along with the RPI Percussion Ensemble, both under the direction of Richard Albagli, on Monday, December 3, 2007 at 8pm in the Main Theatre of the Performing Arts Center on the uptown campus.       The performance will feature works for percussion ensemble from among the very earliest to the very latest -- Edgard Varese’s Ionisation is considered by many to be the first work written for this genre and Lee Tanner’s Umbria was composed for and will premiere at this performance.

Ionisation, first performed in 1931, is a revolutionary work which changed the role and the manner in which composers treated percussion instruments. It calls for 13 players performing on a variety of gongs, drums, cymbals, wooden and metallic instruments and two sirens. Zita Carno and Michael Colgrass were writing for percussion in the ‘50s and ‘60s. Chamber Piece by Colgrass is written mainly for an assortment of drums and works with rhythmic themes. Sextet for Percussion by Carno is symphonic in its structure using marimba, vibraphone and timpani to express the melodic material and 6 tom toms, snare and bass drums to provide the rhythmic underpinning.

Also on the program are two works for ensemble and drum set. Suite for Drum Set and Percussion Ensemble by David Mancini will feature RPI’s Pete Casselini, originally from Columbia High School. The Vic Firth Encore in Jazz features UAlbany’s Max Figarsky, originally from Albany High School. Lee Tanner is a UAlbany student. His new composition, Umbria, is upbeat and melodic. The closing work is Metamorphosis by the conductor of both groups, Richard Albagli. This three-movement piece poses questions of life and death, tragedy and triumph, death and damnation.

Tickets are $6 for the general public and $3 for students and may be purchased through the Performing Arts Center Box Office.  For further information, contact the Box Office at (518) 442-3997 or visit the Performing Arts Center website at www.albany.edu/pac.
