2014 Commencement Ceremonies
May 17th-18th - UAlbany celebrated the graduates of the Class of 2014, representing 170 years of quality public higher education.

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Walk
May 4th - UAlbany's football team volunteered at the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation walk.

Relay for Life
April 26th-27th - UAlbany's Students of Albany Against Cancer raised nearly $60,000 this year for the American Cancer Society's annual Relay for Life. Over 1,369 students, faculty, and staff participated in what has become a major annual fundraising effort.

A Walk to Cure Violence
April 26th - Student group Doctors 4 Hope partnered with SNUG/Cure Violence to organize a march and rally to draw attention to painful toll that gun violence has on our community. 

President's Awards for Exemplary Community Engagement
April 25th - President Jones recognized 10 programs and individuals for their contributions and partnerships in the community that are enhancing public well-being in the Capital Region and beyond. Awardees are working on diverse issues, including public education, youth opportunities, public health, and economic development.

Day of Triqui Culture
April 12th - UAlbany's Anthropology Department and Institute for Mesoamerican Studies hosted the region's Triqui community for an evening of language and cultural exchange. The partnership with this indigenous Mexican community stems from efforts to preserve the Copala Triqui language through the development of an online dictionary.

Rockefeller College Rock Mob
March 27th - Over 100 Rockefeller College alumni gathered on the steps of the New York State Capitol for a "Rock Mob" to highlight the impact that the College and its graduates have on our region and state.  Rockefeller graduates are leaders in the public sphere, helping to shape policy, lead government agencies, and develop social programs.

Student Community Service Activities
Ongoing - Many UAlbany students are committed to making a positive impact in the community. A few examples: (Left) Fuerza Latina members volunteer at the Regional Food Bank; (Center) Service Is Key members raise awareness about homelessness; (Right) Men's Football walks to raise funds for Muscular Dystrophy research.   

Global Game Jam 2014
January 23rd-25th - In partnership with the International Game Developers Association Albany Chapter, the College of Information and Computing hosted students from UAlbany and RPI as well as local video game developers to discuss new ideas for games and generate new prototypes.

Commitment to Education Day
January 23rd - Over 1,800 students and teachers from 19 area schools joined the UAlbany Women's Basketball team and sponsors SEFCU and CDPHP in a fun-filled day at the SEFCU Arena that promoted athletics, academics, nutrition, and sportsmanship. 

RNA Institute Symposium

January 22nd-24th - The RNA Institute, with sponsor Sigma-Aldrich Corporation, hosted a three-day series of hands-on workshops and lectures for the campus and community about RNA science and its applications.  RNA experts from around the country joined UAlbany faculty to highlight the importance of RNA research to human health and disease prevention.

Junior FIRST Lego League Expo

December 7th - The College of Computing and Information, in partnership with Girl Scouts of Northeastern NY and KeyBank, hosted its sixth annual Lego League Expo.  Teams of 6- to 9-year-old children worked with faculty, staff, students, and community volunteers to learn technology skills and how technology can be used during natural disasters and emergency response.

Habitat for Humanity Sheridan Hollow Tour

November 13th - Habitat for Humanity staff members (and UAlbany alums) led a UAlbany delegation on a tour of the Sheridan Hollow neighborhood, describing the organization's large-scale revitalization and development plans. These plans stemmed from research and data collection conducted by a class in the Department of Geography and Planning. 

ACA Navigators Luncheon

November 7th - Rep. Paul Tonko joined President Jones and the School of Social Welfare Dean Katharine Briar-Lawson in toasting the school's Affordable Care Act Navigators.  Since the ACA roll-out, the nine MSW graduate students have been helping Capital District residents navigate the health exchange enrollment process.

Pine Hills Clean-up
October 27th - The UAlbany Student Association and Committee on University & Community Relations teamed up with the Pine Hills Neighborhood Association to host a day of service for UAlbany students cleaning up the Pine Hills neighborhood.  Over 400 students showed up for this biannual event!

Community Engagement Fair
October 16th - UAlbany hosted over 90 exhibitors at its annual Community Engagement Fair, to kick off Connect-to-Community Week 2013.  The Fair featured community organizations seeking student volunteers, as well as UAlbany faculty and students doing exemplary community-engaged research.

President Robert J. Jones' Inauguration
September 28th - Delegates and dignitaries from around the country and local community members joined the UAlbany community for the inauguration of Dr. Robert J. Jones as the University's 19th President.  President Jones delivered his Inaugural Address, outlining his goal of making UAlbany the university of choice for high school juniors and seniors.

Celebrating & Advancing the Albany Promise Cradle-to-Career Partnership
September 25th - President Jones and City School District of Albany Superintendent Vanden Wyngaard hosted a series of workshops at Hackett Middle School to give sixth-grade students a taste of college life.  Hackett students attended workshops on chemistry, gardening, emergency response, law and justice, and art exhibitions.  The event was rounded out with a dance performance by UAlbany's Fuerza Latina Dance Troupe.

A Dialogue with the Tutu Sisters
September 23rd - Naomi and Thandi Tutu, daughters of world renowned peace activist Archbishop Desmond Tutu, join President Jones for a conversation about peace, equality, and social justice during UAlbany's Celebrate & Advance Inauguration events. At left, President Jones poses with Thandi Tutu and a "Tutudesk."  The Tutudesk Campaign provides portable desks to schoolchildren throughout Sub-Saharan Africa.
