Transfers Fall

If you did not attend an orientation conference in the summer, do not worry. We have informative sessions about academic life at UAlbany and you will learn about myriad services available to you. In addition, a great set of social activities are planned for you during the "Great Dane Beginnings" events that follow the Orientation.

It can be confusing to navigate a new university. To assist you in your transition, we created a Transfer Orientation Program. During Orientation, you have time to get to know the campus better, participate in a campus tour and take care of all the most important processes with lots of assistance from current students, faculty, academic advisors and staff. You will meet with a representative from your academic department and, for some students, it is then that they will meet with an advisor and select classes. Representatives of many on-campus offices will be there to discuss the services available to you as a student at UAlbany. With assistance, correct information and an idea of what to expect of the UAlbany community, you'll be off to a great start!

Q1:  I want to register for classes. Can I do so anytime?
All students must consult with an academic advisor before registering for classes.  The "New Transfer Advisement Info" icon at www.albany.edu/advisement  provides additional information regarding registration for classes, major requirements, and academic advisement.  Please note that representatives from all academic departments are planning to meet with students during Orientation.

Q2:  Is there a fall parent orientation program?
There is an optional Parent/Family Orientation Program that occurs separately from the student conferences.  The Parent Program will take place from 2:15 – 5:00pm on Wednesday, August 24 only. This provides an opportunity for your family member, parent or guardian to learn more about the campus environment at UAlbany. You may wish to review sample parent orientation schedule.

(Please note:  There is no Parent Orientation Program on Friday, August 26.)

Q3:  How will I know what courses transferred?
You will receive a "Degree Audit Report" during your Planning Conference that outlines your degree requirements for your major, and indicates how the courses you've previously taken fit that academic plan. Advisors will discuss this with you and explain how your Degree Audit was determined.

Q4:  What is a Degree Audit Report?
The Degree Audit is a useful tool that you and your advisor will use while you are here to follow your progress toward your degree. It outlines your degree requirements, and how the courses you've previously taken fit that plan, and indicates requirements that must still be fulfilled. For more information, go to http://www.albany.edu/registrar/dars.html

Q5:  I have been taking courses at UA through the General Studies program.  I just got admitted to a degree program.  I've been taking classes, so why do I have to attend a Planning Conference?
Students who have been taking courses at UAlbany through the Division of General Studies and who are subsequently admitted to a degree program must attend a Planning Conference also. The Planning Conference process affords you the opportunity to meet with a representative of your academic department prior to General Registration Day. Additionally, there are a number of administrative details that need to be accomplished before the start of classes and the Planning Conference is designed to provide these. Because you are currently attending UAlbany, the $90 orientation fee does not apply to transfers from the General Studies Program.
