Alan J. Lizotte studies the controversial topics of guns and gun control. Lizotte digs beneath the surface of these hotly contested policy issues to examine who is carrying firearms and why. Lizotte will present his expertise to the public when he discusses Guns and Gun Control at UAlbany Day on Saturday, Oct. 25.

"Developing a policy to deal with firearms violence seems almost impossible politically and practically, given the seeming enormity of the problem," said Lizotte. "However, once one studies the facts, it becomes clear that there are many different small problems with firearms violence and many of these are relatively easy to address."

Lizotte, executive director of the Hindelang Criminal Justice Research Center and a professor at UAlbany's School of Criminal Justice since 1985, earned a doctorate from the University of Illinois in sociology in 1979. On UAlbany Day, he will offer a brief overview of the patterns of legal and illegal firearms ownership and use.

Lizotte's talk, which begins at 12:15 p.m. in Humanities 109 on the main campus, is free and open to the public. It is just one of a myriad of activities and events during UAlbany Day, which will showcase to the community how the University puts the world within reach. UAlbany Day activities will highlight the richness of the University's academics, student success, and campus life. The day's activities include tours, a Farmers' Market, a basketball scrimmage, a tailgate party, and the Homecoming football game against St. Francis.
