UAlbany Practices Emergency Management Response

Contact: Catherine Herman (518) 437-4980

ALBANY, N.Y. (November 22, 2005) -- The University at Albany underwent a formal drill of emergency response as part of a simulated incident. The drill simulated an accident involving a vehicle carrying hazardous materials that crashed into the southeast corner of the Biology building, with the materials being released into the air. The University deployed its Emergency Management Response Plan, initiating its Incident Command System.

In the event of an accident, such as the simulated crash that the University responded to were to occur on campus, the Emergency Management Team would mobilize at a central operations center in the University Police Building. Intelligence is delivered between the Satellite Operation Centers and the central command center, with resources directed to the appropriate outposts.

"Our goal was to simulate an event that would require us to deploy our Emergency Management Response Plan and put our Incident Command System into action,"; said University President Kermit L. Hall. "This drill serves to educate our University community and prepare us for any large scale emergency.";

The drill also serves as another tool in the University's Campus Emergency Management and Planning Initiative. Commissioned in response to the 9/11 attacks, a committee was formed and an emergency plan was developed to provide a management framework to respond to major emergencies that may threaten the health and safety of the university community, or disrupt its programs and operations.
