ALBANY, N.Y. (December 19, 2002) -- While the holiday season is a time of joy and celebration, for many it is filled with anxiety and stress over visits from relatives, holiday dinners and parties, last-minute gift-buying and more -- particularly in this final week before Christmas. Ed Blanchard, director of the University at Albany's Center for Stress and Anxiety Disorders, offers the following tips on dealing with the stress of the holiday season:

1. Plan ahead - allow extra time to complete all those tasks.

2. Set reasonable expectations - avoid perfectionism.

3. Get plenty of rest; maintain regular exercise routine.

4. Use moderation in holiday food and drink.

5. Try to maintain your routine.

6. Decide ahead how to divide time between your family of origin and your in-laws.

Dr. Blanchard is available for interviews and commentary. For more information, contact 437-4989.
