Biography:
Hilde Hoogenboom grew up in the Albany area, went to Williams College as a Tyng Scholar for a bachelor's degree in Russian and English literatures (1981). She earned her doctorate in Russian at Columbia University (1996). She was the Jesse Ball DuPont Fellow at the National Humanities Center (2000-01) and Postdoctoral Fellow in the Eurasia Program of the Social Sciences Research Council (2001-02) for her book project, "Identity and Realism: Russian Women Writers in the Nineteenth Century," a study of noble culture, gender, and aesthetics. Her new translation of Catherine the Great's Memoirs from French was published by Random House in 2005. She is fluent in Dutch, Russian, German, and French.
