| Biography: Edward L. Hannan, Ph.D., M.S., M.S., F.A.C.C. is Distinguished Professor and chair of the Department of Health Policy, Management and Behavior at the School of Public Health. Hannan holds a doctorate in industrial engineering and operations research, and master's degrees in operations research and mathematics. He has previously taught quantitative methods in business schools and has served as the Director of the Bureau of Health Care Research of the New York State Department of Health. He has published more than 160 papers in refereed journals on a variety of topics related to health services research and quantitative methods. For the last several years, Hannan has been involved in the development and use of clinical and administrative databases for cardiac surgery, angioplasty, trauma care, carotid endarterectomy, cancer and hip fractures. These databases have been used to identify risk factors related to mortality and complications, to predict the occurrence of these adverse events, and to assess provider performance after having adjusted for differences in the pre-procedural risk of patients. Articles describing this work have appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association, the New England Journal of Medicine, Medical Care, the Annals of Thoracic Surgery, the Journal of Trauma, Health Services Research, the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, and numerous other journals. |
