Following the echoing chimes of the noon Carillon bells, the University at Albany community gathered outside the University Police Department building to remember student Richard Bailey, one-year after his tragic and sudden death.

Students, administrators, staff and UPD officers huddled near the Eastern red bud tree and memorial marker dedicated in Baileys honor last year for a ceremony celebrating the 22-year-old Long Island natives life and legacy.

It was a tragedy that shook and saddened our campus, said President George M. Philip. Rick was an outstanding individual, filled with humor, spirit and generosity. His goal was to become a police officer, like his dad.

During the ceremony, the University announced the first recipient of the Richard Bailey Memorial Scholarship, Samuel DeWitt, whose aim is to enter law enforcement after graduating with a combined bachelors and masters degree from UAlbanys nationally ranked School of Criminal Justice in 2010.

To date, about $50,000 has been raised in support of the Richard Bailey Memorial Scholarship through generous contributions made by the Class of 2009 and members of the UAlbany community.

"I can't imagine what his family went through, but I would hope that I, as well as all of the other criminal justice graduates, would be able to carry on Richard's memory," DeWitt said.

Donations can be made to The Richard Bailey Memorial Scholarship by contacting Valerie DiRocco Ruskin, The University at Albany Foundation, at (518) 437-5090.
