President's Awards for Leadership winners

From left, Florencia Cornet, Tamara Smith, and Maria Onetti-Bischoff were three of six graduate students who, for the first time ever, were presented the President’s Awards for Leadership March 6. Also receiving awards were Larri Fish, Joshua Hewitt, and Susan McCormick. There were 94 award winners, among them 17 recipients of the Outstanding Senior Awards. School of Social Welfare Dean Katharine Briar-Lawson was elected president of the National Association of Deans and Directors of Schools of Social Work (NADD) at its annual meeting in March. Since 2001, she has co-chaired the NADD Gerontological Task and she is collaboratively spearheading the development of a NADD Leadership Academy.

SSW Associate Dean and Professor Anne E. (Ricky) Fortune has been elected president of the Society for Social Work and Research (SSWR) for 2005-'06. SSWR was founded in 1994 as a professional organization for social work researchers.

School of Education Dean Susan D. Phillips has been appointed by the NYS Regents to the New York State Professional Standards and Practices Board for Teaching. The board serves the Regents and the Commissioner of Education on matters associated with teaching and related professions in New York State.

The University Police Department (UPD) has won the International Association of Chiefs of Police 2005 Award for Excellence in Technology in the category of information technology. Aran Mull and Tom Kilcullen were cited for their efforts in developing a cost-effective and agency-specific comprehensive data management system.

Leonard A. Slade, Jr., professor and chair of the Department of Africana Studies and adjunct professor of English, was elected at the Modern Language Association (MLA) convention in Philadelphia, Pa., in December 2004 by the Division on Black American Literature and Culture's Executive Committee to serve as the division's representative in the MLA Delegate Assembly. His three-year term of office began in January.

Professor of English Judith Johnson's new book Cities of Mathematics and Desire (The Sheep Meadow Press, 2005) has won the Poetry Society of America's Di Castagnola Award for best poetry manuscript. The new volume reads like a form of spoken opera, with its many characters and conflicts, arias, and choral ensembles. The title poem of the collection is a meditation on love, chaos theory, and the poetry of Anna Akhmatova and Guillaume Apollinaire.
