‘Lightning Talks’ to Focus on Building Partnerships

Program is sponsored by the Advanced Data Analytics Network

ALBANY, N.Y. (Oct 3, 2017) – The Advanced Data Analytics "Lightning Talks" series is back for its second year beginning this week.

The first of four sessions will take place on Wednesday, October 11th from 3-4:30p.m. in University Hall (UNH) Room 110.

Advanced Data Analytics Lightning Talks are meant to serve the University community as a forum to test ideas, seek partners and resources, offer skills, discuss curricular design questions and explore possibilities for external grants, among other activities. UAlbany faculty, staff and members of the outside community are invited to participate.

The first session will feature Francis Boscoe, epidemiology and biostatics professor; Gregory Wiedeman, archivist from the M.E. Grenander Department of Special Collections & Archives’ and Gina Volynsky, director of the Center for International Development.

“Since the speakers come from all fields of study, anyone can find something relevant to their area of interest and expertise,” said Theresa Pardo, chair of the ADA Steering Committee and director of the Center for Technology in Government at UAlbany. This year’s topics range from “Social Media Analytics” to “Examining the Scientific Life with Big Data”.

Pardo said this year’s series will have a stronger focus on building cross-disciplinary collaborations and partnerships. For example, in addition to their research, each speaker will discuss their experience securing funding and producing research projects that advance data analytics.

Going forward, Pardo says, “we hope to engage a number of people outside of the university who have important relationships with us and promote data management knowledge sharing.” Case in point, the November session will host Todd Harbour, New York State’s chief data officer, to better inform the campus community on the state’s current efforts to improve data stewardship.

Lightning Talk speakers will have 10 minutes to present with a 5 minute Q&A following the talk. The sessions all last 1.5 hours with 30 minutes open discussion and networking at the end.

Multiple viewing options

The talks will be available to view via livestream for those unable to attend. The Office of Communications and Marketing is broadcasting all four installments of the program on Twitter Live, and viewers are encouraged to interact by using the @UAlbanyNews handle for questions and comments.
