Life-Saving Heart Doctor

ALBANY, N.Y. (May 3, 2017) – UAlbany alum Dr. Evan Zahn '82 has received some well-deserved recognition from late-night host Jimmy Kimmel.

Kimmel revealed on Monday’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” that his wife gave birth to a son, William, who, within a few hours of delivery, was found to have severe heart defects. He needed immediate open-heart surgery. Luckily, it was a successful procedure.

Dr. Zahn, a pediatric cardiologist, was the first doctor on the scene. After performing an echocardiogram, he diagnosed William with a congenital heart disease and discussed options with the family.

“It was Friday night, so they called a pediatric cardiologist, Dr. Zahn, who was picking his mother up from the airport. Luckily her plane was not delayed because he got to the hospital very quickly,” Kimmel said.

Dr. Zahn graduated from UAlbany in 1982 with a bachelor’s degree in biology. He’s since established the “Evan Michael Zahn, M.D. Presidential Scholarship” to support an undergraduate student who is enrolled in a liberal arts program and has a strong interest in health care.

After UAlbany, Dr. Zahn went on to earn his medical degree at New York Medical College, and completed his pediatric training at the University of Colorado’s Affiliated Hospitals in Denver. He’s currently a pediatric cardiologist in Los Angeles and affiliated with Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
