University Offers Workplace Safety Sessions

ALBANY, N.Y. (February 26, 2016) – Do you know what to do if there is a chemical spill in the laboratory or if the toaster oven in the shared kitchen area catches fire? Have you ever used one of the external defibrillators that dot the academic podium? What should you do if a student who is angry about a grade follows you to your car?
To provide some guidance on these issues, the Division of Finance and Administration is offering a workplace safety informational session for all University employees on both the Downtown and Uptown campuses:
- Uptown Campus, Lecture Center 6, Monday, February 29, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
- Downtown Campus, Milne 200 (Fossieck Room), Monday, March 7, 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.
“The safety of our faculty and staff is important. When any type of safety incident occurs on this campus, we respond well,” said Vice President for Finance and Administration James Van Voorst. “We have people who are trained to handle emergencies. We want to increase awareness among our faculty and staff of the number of training avenues that are available to them if they need information about workplace safety.”
The University Police Department, Environmental Health and Safety, Facilities Management, and Human Resources will offer tips, skills, and knowledge to help employees address potential problem areas in their departments and provide information on the wide range of workplace safety training programs available.
Employees may attend, with supervisory approval, without charging accruals. Directors, department heads, and supervisors are encouraged to allow all faculty and staff to attend this important session.
To supplement these tips, the Employee Assistance Program offers many stress reduction programs to reduce tension in the office, and also offers voluntary, confidential information, assessment and referral services for a variety of workplace and personal issues.
After the information session, the presentations will be posted to the Finance and Administration website.
