The UAlbany and Albany Law Connection Grows

A new new cybersecurity concentration and a Collaborative Venture Fund to promote research collaboration between UAlbany and Albany Law School faculty are among the features emerging from the two institutions' stronger affiliation.

ALBANY, N.Y. (February 10, 2016) — Since committing to a much deeper affiliation last fall, UAlbany and Albany Law School have made significant progress in creating new academic opportunities for students and sparking novel research and grant prospects for faculty.

Academic Advancements

Recognizing an increasing need for legal specialists in data protection, privacy and cybersecurity, Albany Law School recently launched a concentration in Law and Cybersecurity in partnership with UAlbany’s School of Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security and Cybersecurity.

The program is designed to prepare J.D. graduates to provide counsel to a broad range of industries and individuals on an array of legal matters, including: data breach; cybercrime; compliance with state, local, federal, and international privacy laws and regulations; implementing security policies; records management; digital media privacy; litigation; and more.

Twenty-four credits will be required to complete the concentration and courses in the core curriculum will be offered at both Albany Law School and UAlbany. Students enrolled at the Law School can take these classes at the University as part of the pursuit of their law degree and will not require separate matriculation, application to UAlbany, or additional tuition.

Albany Law Open House

Interested students can learn more about the new cybersecurity concentration, as well as all of the joint offerings at an Open House on Fri., February 26 from 2 – 6 p.m. at Albany Law School. The Open House is exclusively for current UAlbany students and will provide them with an opportunity to learn about the law school admissions process, financial aid and career opportunities, as well as an opportunity to sit in a mock law class. Additionally, Albany Law faculty will be available to answer any questions students have about law school, classes and the legal field.

To attend, please register by Wed., February 17 at albanylaw.edu/ualbanyopenhouse. Space may be limited, so early registration is encouraged. Transportation will be provided to those students who register.

Faculty Research and Grant Funding

The organizations kicked off the New Year with the inaugural Collaborative Venture Fund. The program is designed to enable faculty from the two organizations to pursue joint research and grant opportunities.

The program provided awards totaling $12,650 to five collaborative teams. Forty-eight faculty - 28 from the University and 20 from the Law School - worked together to identify projects that promote sustainable partnerships and provide opportunities for our students and faculty. Awarded projects are outlined in the Venture Fund first round press release.

The second round of the 2015-16 Collaborative Venture Fund recently released a request for proposals due by February 28.
