UAlbany Salutes Veterans with Series of Events

UAlbany works to make the campus welcoming to veterans from all walks of life.

ALBANY, N.Y. (Nov. 9, 2015) – In honor of Veterans Day on Wednesday, the University at Albany will celebrate the men and women who have helped to preserve the safety of the country and contribute to the campus community.

Across the region’s only public research University, veteran and non-veteran students, faculty and staff work each day to make our campus welcoming and helpful to veterans from all walks of life.

“As with all our students, we want to assure that our veterans have the services and support that will enable them to succeed,” said UAlbany President Robert J. Jones. “We urge everyone on our campus community to do their part, and honor our veterans not just on a holiday but throughout the entire year.”

A Full Slate of Events

• The University will salute its heroes at a 24-hour Veterans Day walk/run on Nov. 10-11. Hosted by UAlbany Veteran Services, the event will begin at noon on Nov. 10. Students, faculty and staff will walk or run in 30 minute time slots until noon on Nov. 11. The walk/run will conclude with a flag raising ceremony at the Collins Circle flagpole on the Uptown Campus. To sign up, visit the UAlbany Veterans Services page.

• UAlbany has a rich history of students, faculty, and staff serving in the military. In recognition of these historic alumni, three plaques will be on display at Wednesday’s Citizen Laureate awards ceremony honoring veterans/alumni who served in the Civil War, World War I and World War II. One of the stories dates back to a time when two professors equipped student volunteers with a rifle and a blanket, and took them to fight for the Union in the Civil War.

• On Wednesday evening, the UAlbany water tower/carillon on its uptown campus, the University’s Cancer Research Center on its East Campus in Rensselaer, and its downtown campus will be illuminated to honor the SUNY-sponsored Green Light a Vet program, which aims to illuminate the nation with green lights to honor active military and veterans across the U.S.

• On Saturday, November 14, the University will honor the nation’s veterans and active service members at the third annual Todd J. Clark Memorial Game in partnership with Wounded Warrior Project with personalized recognition on the game-worn uniforms. In addition, the Great Danes will honor servicemen and servicewomen, active and retired, at halftime of the UAlbany-New Hampshire football game on Bob Ford Field at the new Tom & Mary Casey Stadium. Each honored service member will receive two tickets to the game and a commemorative item.

The UAlbany community of faculty, staff and students include nearly 500 veterans. These men and women represent all branches of the military, including the National Guard and the Reserves.
