How Students Spend a #UAlbanySummer: Congressional Internship, Studying Rainfall in Chile, as Taylor Swift's Social Media Ambassador

ALBANY, N.Y. (August 5, 2015) – From the forests of Chile to the halls of Congress in Washington D.C., University at Albany students are gaining practical and professional experience this summer through a variety of opportunities, including internships, study abroad, volunteer work and research assistantships.

UAlbany also serves as an ideal location for students from other universities, both in the United States and internationally, seeking to advance their research and professional experience while continuing to build the skills necessary to launch successful careers.

Here's a sample of how students are spending their #UAlbanySummer:

UAlbany sophomore Zainub Amir (pictured above) serves as a social media ambassador on Twitter for Taylor Swift.

• Sophomore business major Zainub Amir has spent the summer virtually interning with NashvilleGab, an online country music newspaper based in Nashville, Tennessee. The Delmar, New York native has been writing about the latest happenings in the country music industry. She also serves as a social media ambassador on Twitter for Taylor Swift throughout the year, particularly during award shows or music releases.
• Junior Yanelis Martinez is one of eight individuals chosen by the Gay & Lesbian Victory Institute to join the 2015 Class of Victory Congressional Interns. A summer intern in the Washington, D.C., office of Arizona Rep. Raúl Grijalva, Martinez was chosen from a pool of more than 100 national applicants.
• Graduate student Erik Schlimmer is launching a long-term project to decode the meaning behind all of Albany’s 800 current street names. He plans to unveil his findings in a book titled, “Capital Cobblestone,” after conducting approximately four years of research.
• Doctoral student Ben Mielenz is in Turkey this summer on a full Critical Language Scholarship from the U.S. Department of State. He plans to learn more about Ladino, a language that combines the grammar of Spanish with the lexicon of Turkish.
• Atmospheric sciences doctoral student Adam Massman is examining precipitation in Chile through a grant received by assistant professor Justin Minder. The goal is to use field observations to gain process-level understanding of orographic rainfall over the Nahuelbuta Mountains of Southern Chile, which can be used to improve understanding and modeling of rainfall over similar locations, such as coastal California.
