Prospective Students Tour Campus at Fall 2014 Open House

ALBANY, N.Y. (October 27, 2014) – The University at Albany welcomed more than 2,300 prospective students and their families to campus recently for its Fall 2014 Open House, as high school upperclassmen and transfer students begin the college selection process.

Prospective students who choose UAlbany will be attending during a time of great expansion. New features include undergraduate programs in digital forensics and computer engineering, a $62.2 million expansion to the Campus Center, completed renovations to the main fountain and 440-bed Mohawk Tower, a new Information Technology building, as well as continued exploration of possible affiliations with Albany Law School and Downstate Medical Center.

Open House: An Introduction to UAlbany

The Fall 2014 Open House featured a variety of interactive activities including walking tours led by current students, academic overview sessions, an academic and student services fair and various other opportunities to speak with members of the UAlbany community.

“Most of the students visiting for Open House have not yet applied to colleges. This event allows them access to faculty and staff they would not normally interact with if they visited for one of our daily information sessions and tour,” said Jaclyn Napoleon, UAlbany Senior Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admissions. “Students need to experience the campus to know if UAlbany is the right fit.”

At the event, students were allowed the opportunity to meet and network with faculty, students and admissions professionals from their intended major. Currently, UAlbany offers more than 50 majors and 60 minors for incoming students. Outside of academics, representation from more than 30 student departments were tabling in the Lecture Center Concourse. Those in attendance included UAlbany’s Financial Aid Office, Office of Residential Life, Honors College, Study Abroad Program and Dining Services.

Campus Tours

Current UAlbany undergraduate students led campus tours offering prospective students and families with access to different aspects of the University including the Academic Podium, Athletics Facilities, State Quad Residence Halls, Campus Center Dining and the School of Business Building.

Kelsey O’Leary, a senior in UAlbany’s Honors Biology Program, has worked as a student assistant with the University’s Undergraduate Admissions Department for three years. She began giving tours of campus in August, most recently at Open House. A Boston native, O’Leary remembers touring the campus as a prospective student and knows its importance.

“You can only learn so much from the Internet. I remember coming to UAlbany for the first time and thinking ‘I can see myself going here. This looks like the place for me,’” O’Leary said. “It’s important to think about how the University can help you get to where you want to be and what it offers you for your future.”

Undergraduate Application Deadlines

UAlbany’s non-binding undergraduate early action deadline is Nov. 15; its regular admission deadline is March 1. Visit UAlbany’s Undergraduate Admissions website to learn more or apply now.
