Free Community Event Featuring Atmospheric and Environmental Demonstrations and Activities
UAlbany's Family Earth Day event on April 27th will feature environment-themed demonstrations and activities.
ALBANY, N.Y. (April 18, 2014) -- The University at Albany is culminating a weeklong series of activities in celebration of the Earth, the environment and sustainability by hosting the 2nd annual Family Earth Day on Sunday, April 27 from 1-4 p.m. on the University's uptown campus. Time Warner Cable (TWC) News Albany Chief Meteorologist Mike Bono will serve as guest host and keynote at the event, which is geared toward children and families and organized by UAlbany's Department of Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences.
A wide range of activities are also planned to appeal to a broad youth audience including a land planning challenge; composting; glaciers: then and now; creating arctic creatures mobiles, and a traveling nitrogen game, where students learn how clouds are formed.
UAlbany's Earth and Wellness Day on April 23rd features free health screenings, therapy dogs and a clothing exchange (Lori Van Buren, Times Union photo used by permission).
Other demonstrations and lectures planned include Atmospheric Sciences Research Center Senior Research Associate Richard Perez on solar power and Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences Assistant Professor Justin Minder on the science of clouds.
Special guest Mike Bono is the Chief Meteorologist at TWC News Albany. Bono is a familiar name and face to many who have seen him during his long career with The Weather Channel in Atlanta. His on-camera work has always been complimented by his presentations at regional and national conferences and regular visits to civic organizations, youth groups and schools.
Registration is available online. Advance registration includes a free subscription to the Windows to the Universe science education site. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the Lecture Center Corridor W. Free parking will also be available.

The annual Earth and Wellness Day will include an array of exhibitions, therapy dogs, free health screenings, demonstrations and a clothing exchange. The 'Trashion Fashion' Show is a newly created event, to be held at 7 p.m. in the Campus Center ballroom. Designers work with unconventional items to create an ensemble made from reclaimed or recyclable materials. Winning designs receive $150. The show will feature an environment-themed runway exhibition and DJ.
The Food and Arts Festival will be held at Liberty Terrace from 1-4 p.m., and features food, vendors, life music, and arts and crafts.
