Great Danes Men Win America East Title to Head to NCAA Basketball Tourney 2nd Year in a Row

Home of the Seawolves, but Domain of the Danes: UAlbany men pose with the championship trophy after defeating Stony Brook, 69-60.

Stony Brook, NY (March 15, 2014) -- The Cinderella Great Danes men's basketball team is again headed to the big dance at the NCAA Tournament.

Sparked by Sam Rowley's 18 points, and timely shooting down the stretch from Peter Hooley, who wound up with 15, fourth-seeded UAlbany overcame extensive foul trouble in the second half and used a stifling defense on Stony Brook in the final minutes to upset the second-seeded Seawolves on their home court 69-60 Saturday in the America East Conference final.

UAlbany continued playing its absolute best in the 2013-14 season at the perfect time. The Danes beat America East top-seeded Vermont a week ago and now the second seed to clinch a berth in the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive time and for the fourth time in school history.

The Great Danes will face Mount St. Mary's of Maryland on Tuesday in Dayton, Ohio, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Tip-off is set for 6:40 p.m., and the game will be televised live on TruTV.

In three of the Great Danes' four NCAA Tournament appearances under head coach Will Brown, they finished second or worse during the regular season. Last season, Albany went 9-7 in the regular season before winning the automatic bid -- and they followed that same exact routine this season.

What's Brown's secret?

"I don't know," he said, jokingly, after today's win. "Rope-a-dope?"
