The DNA Academy at the University at Albany is an innovative improvement on conventional one-on-one, on-site mentor training programs.

DNA is the fingerprint of the 21st Century

--Governor George E. Pataki

Our twelve-week, twelve graduate credit hour program cuts in half the usual twelve-month mentor training. Our program is followed by a one- to three-month “polishing” at the home lab.

Our dedicated training facility frees up your laboratory’s instrumentation and operations space. Or, if you choose, we can bring our program to your laboratory, for onsite group training using your own equipment.

Student doing lab work at the DNA AcademyDNA Academy curriculum is customized on a state-by-state basis for DNA Casework. We adapt our coursework to suit the needs of each laboratory and agency, adjusting for differences in state laws and SOPs (standard operating procedures).

Students completing the DNA Academy meet all mandated state, national and international accreditation standards for forensic laboratories, including ISO 17025. The DNA Academy has partnered with Quenpro, Incorporated, an Accreditation/Management System, to deliver the highest quality ISO/IEC 17025 training program. Quenpro has extensive experience providing training for many forensic laboratories, and for the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors Laboratory Accreditation Board (ASCLD/LAB).

DNA Academy training concludes with a Moot Court, using real attorneys. Here students receive essential training in how to communicate complex evidentiary information to juries. The New York Prosecutors Training Institute provides instruction, taping, and critique.

Our graduates are case-ready and bench-ready.

  • Our training laboratories utilize instrumentation identical to that of the New York State Police Department’s crime labs
  • Our instruments are continually validated
  • We use current software, including Genemapper ID 3.2 and Data Collection 3.0
  • Linkage to NYSP’s Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • More than 100 essential forensic DNA journal articles are electronically accessible
  • Trainees have the option to take the course for graduate credit
  • Our staff/student ratio is 1:2
  • Our staff is international and multilingual, as are our students

"DNA Training Academy Class #2 just completed their AMAZINGLY FAST competency development process, and we will be assigning each of these graduates 16 new items for forensic DNA testing each month, with their first assignments slated for 1 OCT 06.  WOW!  Less than 9 months from start to finish! "

--Carl Selavka, Ph. D.
   Director
Massachusetts State Police Crime Laboratory System

“We’ll create a DNA scientist in twelve weeks, followed by 12 weeks of in-house training at the home laboratory.”

---W. Mark Dale, Director of the DNA Academy and NERFI
