The National Center for Security & Preparedness (NCSP) in partnership the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services (DHSES) continued its Professional Development Speaker Series on June 12, 2014, hosting Ben Spear, a cybersecurity intelligence analyst at the Center for Internet Security.
The National Center for Security & Preparedness seeks to attract an audience of both students aspiring to work in the homeland security enterprise and faculty that are interested in engaging with experts across the field. The NCSP Speaker Series features professionals from the first responder, emergency management, and homeland security communities to facilitate an open discussion and provide students and faculty with the opportunity to actively bridge the gap between academia and practice.
During Mr. Spear's presentation, students, faculty and staff from the Rockefeller College, the School of Criminal Justice, and the NCSP received a thorough overview of the role of the Center for Internet Security and its links with agencies all across the nation.

Ben Spear generated a relaxed atmosphere, promoting a back and forth open dialogue with current students. Mr. Spear emphasized the value of building strong relationships with professors and mentors, citing his career path and how it was impacted by personal contacts along the way.
Mr. Spear recognized the importance of adapting to new environments and changing circumstances by identifying opportunities and taking risks in the job market. His experience is an extraordinary example of combining passion for computer science and deep curiosity of current policy affairs.
The event had a full-house with an actively engaged audience providing the opportunity for a one-on-one conversation with a successful Rockefeller graduate. The event was a success in providing students with the opportunity to widen their understanding of the homeland security enterprise as well as to network with a recent alumnus of the College. The NCSP will continue its Professional Development Speaker Series with the next event scheduled in September. For more information and to register for future events, please visit our website.
