Music Theory, History, Composition, and Literature
Theory
Under the guidance of Prof. Reed Hoyt and others, students learn topics such as harmony, counterpoint, part-writing, chord structures, sight-singing and dictation, form and analysis, and orchestration. Courses are available for Music majors and minors, as well as non-majors seeking to broaden their musical understanding.
History
The Music Department offers courses in the history of Western Music, from antiquity to today, under the direction of Prof. Nancy Newman. Specific course areas include historical surveys, opera, American music, Music of the Baroque Period, Music of the Classical and Romantic Periods, and Music of the 20th Century.
Composition
Under the direction of Prof. Max Lifchitz, students learn the fundamentals and techniques of musical composition. With faculty guidance, students also explore their own creativity, while developing the craft required to become a composer. Additional courses in electronic music composition are offered within Electronic Music and Media.
Music Literature
Students can explore Western and non-Western music in courses about Music and Society in Latin America, American Music, Black American Music, Women and Music, and Music of the Jewish People. Music history courses, noted above, offer an exposure to the breadth and depth of musical literature.
