John
Menick will investigate a series of displacements that occur when
people are given a choice between the demands of the workplace and
the promise of leisure time. In his piece 9 to 5, 5 to 9, Menick
will ask several students who work at the University Art Museum
to respond to a series of questions about life on the job. The student’s
will then be compensated by Menick to explore a leisure activity
during the time that they are normally scheduled to work at the
museum. The results of Menick’s project are unpredictable; by re-routing
the course of these students’ day, Menick challenges the parameters
of responsibility and control and begs the question: Whom do we
ultimately answer to?
