Ruth Duckworth,
Untitled #374493, 1993. Stoneware 17 3/4 x 4 1/2 x 6 3/4 inches.
Born in 1919 in Hamburg, Germany.
As a German Jew, Ruth Duckworth had to leave her native Germany in order
to study art during the rise of Hitler. She moved to London, where she
attended Kensington School of Art. She lived in England until 1964, when
she was invited to teach sculpture at the University of Chicago. She has
remained in the U.S.; after years of creating functional stoneware, she
has continued to produce ceramic sculpture like Untitled #374493
that reflects her mastery of the medium.
