Born in 1923 in Norfolk, Virginia.

Fay Chandler came to art in her early forties after her fourth child was born. Chandler grew up in the South where she defied social norms required of a "proper lady." "I was always wondering why women were given such a particular role--at least in the South," she says. "I rather liked the idea of shocking people, of doing something people wouldn't expect."

Chandler painted and used found objects to create three-dimensional works of art. "Without consciously or intentionally doing so, I have discovered that my subject matter focuses upon women and childhood--feminist issues."
