Beverly
Pepper, Knowledge Attained, The Odyssey Series,
1989, oil on canvas, 81 1/2 x 81 3/4 inches.
Born in New York City in 1924.
Beverly Pepper began as a commercial art director in New York City but
soon left for Paris to study painting. After years of painting, Pepper
shifted her focus to creating monumental outdoor sculpture. Many of her
pieces can be seen in public spaces throughout Europe and the US. While
continuing to show large, abstract pieces, Pepper returned to the canvas
in 1987. Knowledge Attained, The Odyssey Series reflects Beverly Pepper's
gestural, expansive, colorful elements drawn from the power of nature.
Her work --whether painted or sculpted-- reveals a sense of tenacity fueled
by the earth's raw energy.
Beverly Pepper has been included in major shows and group projects where
she was the sole woman. In a 1975 interview, Pepper comments, "The female
artist inevitably finds she must fight harder than most males to gain
an equivalent position."
