February 1 through April 2, 2011
(Main Gallery/ Second Floor)
Featuring paintings and drawings of hybrid landscapes that appear at once virtual and real. In a dizzying amalgam of saturated colors, multiple lines, warped spaces, and swirling movements, Maier explodes the conventions of traditional landscape painting while still maintaining a connection to art historical and scientific sources as varied as Der Blaue Reiter, the Situationists, satellite imagery, and geological models. A recent 3D video animation pushes further into new spatial realms.
Ati Maier (b. 1962, Munich, Germany) lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Her most recent 3D video animation was featured at the Fokus Lodz Biennale 2010 in Lodz, Poland. Her work is part of the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art (NYC), the Museum der bildenden Künste Leipzig (Germany), among others, and has been included in exhibitions at the Städtische Galerie Wolfsburg (Germany) and the Whitney Museum of American Art (NYC).
