The Arts planning group first discussed events already scheduled or on the drawing board that can be folded into the Albany Heritage program.  These include an Albany Symphony Orchestra concert in March 2002 that could launch the program; an exhibit at the AIHA, Matters of Taste:  Food and Drink in 17th Century Dutch Art and Life; a program to be held at the Empire State Plaza on Nelson Rockefeller and Public Art that will include a symposium, a catalogue, and guest speakers (perhaps Sister Wendy will be one of the speakers); a concert series offered by the College of St. Rose commemorating the 350th anniversary of the founding of Beverwyck; and an exhibit at the University at Albany Museum, Heart of the City:  Four Centuries of the Architecture of State Street, that will include drawings, architectural sketches, and perhaps paintings.  Secondly, the group discussed possible venues for events.  Among those considered were the AIHA and Albany International Airport.  Thirdly, the group discussed the parameters of events to be given under the arts rubric.  Might the decorative arts be included along with the fine and performing arts?  By including the decorative arts it would be possible to give a talk or talks on material culture that would highlight the wonderful decorative arts collections at the AIHA, and perhaps Ten Broeck Mansion Museum, Schuyler Mansion Museum, and Cherry Hill Museum.  Raising public awareness of these institutions could be one of the goals of the arts component of Albany Heritage.

The group did not try to develop a list of lectures, but some possible topics were considered, including one on contemporary art.  Compiling a list of lectures will be one of the main goals of the next meeting.  Another goal will be deciding on musical events, in addition to those already scheduled.  Little discussion was given to theatrical events, although they are clearly an important part of the arts programming.  Work has to be done in this area; we hope the picture will be clearer at the time of the next meeting.  Among the questions asked, but not answered, was the role of popular music and events belonging broadly to the realm of popular culture.  Another question was the place of religion in the Albany Heritage program and more specifically within the arts component.  Is there a place for religious music?  Should the arts planning group think about churches and synagogues as repositories of art, and as such included in the arts program?

What clearly emerged from the discussion is how rich the potential is for the arts component of the Albany Heritage program.    It is our task to achieve this potential.  The next meeting will take place at Albany International Airport on January 3 at 10:00 a.m.  It is hoped that everyone interested in programming arts events will attend this meeting.
