Libbie Levis was born in 1891 in New York City.  She was the eldest of five children born to parents of Russian descent.  In 1900, the family lived on Attorney St. in downtown Manhattan in a predominately Russian-Jewish neighborhood.  Libbie’s father Lazarus worked as a store clerk in the garment industry, where he made a decent living.  All his children were able to attend school without having to work.  In 1920, the Lewis’ were living uptown at 50 West 112th St. in Harlem in a neighborhood that was predominately Russian and Jewish.  Libbie’s father was now working as a manager and official.  Still single, Libbie was employed as a teacher, which offered her an excellent income—higher than her father’s.  Her two sisters were both employed as stenographers.  The family was doing extremely well financially at this time.
