Born in New York in May of 1890, John Crooke was one of six children of native New Yorker parents.  At age 10 in 1900, he lived with his father at 43 Driffild St. in Brooklyn, and attended school.  In 1920, 31 year-old John and his wife Lillien, also born in New York to native New Yorker parents, rented a home at 247 Auduton Ave. in Manhattan.  John worked as either an artist or art teacher, while his wife was employed as a stenographer, a high status job for a woman at this time.  The couple was childless.
