Homecoming Weekend 2005Join the Fun at Homecoming/Family Weekend and Reunion 2005!
It's one of the biggest weekends of the year at UAlbany! Join us for a jam-packed weekend of events, Oct. 7-9. Highlights include the UAlbany vs. Stony Brook football game, Touchdown Tailgate, President’s Brunch and Comedy Night. The weekend also features reunions for the classes of ’70, ’75, ’80, ’85, ’90, ’95, ’00 and ’05. Visit our Web page for all the details!

School of Business Plans Capital Region Alumni Event
School of Business alumni are invited to join Paul Leonard Ph.D. 75,'76, UAlbany dean and professor of finance, for a reception celebrating UAlbany School of Business alumni, faculty and staff. The event will be held Oct. 20, 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Albany Marriott. The cost is $15 per person and includes beverages and hors d'oeuvres. Lu Shengzhong artworkThe New Emerging from the Old, Lu Shengzhong: Works 1980-2005
The UAlbany Art Museum will present the work of major Chinese contemporary artist Lu Shengzhong Sept. 20-Nov. 13. The Beijing-based artist will create a site-specific installation from thousands of red tissue paper figures reaching from floor to ceiling in the museum space. An artist’s reception will be held Sept. 29, 5-7 p.m. For details, call (518) 442-4035 or visit www.albany.edu/museum.

Friends of the Libraries Sponsors Trip to Peebles Island
UAlbany’s Friends of the Libraries will sponsor a trip to Peebles Island Resource Center Sept. 21, 2005. The center, a New York state facility, performs and administers preservation programs for New York’s historic sites and 164 parks. The tour will include travel by air-conditioned bus plus tour guides. Cost is $22 per person. For more information, contact Ben-Ami Lipetz at (518) 766-3014.

President to Gather with New York City Alumni
UAlbany President Kermit L. Hall and the Metro New York Alumni Association Chapter will host the “New York City Festival of Alumni and Friends” Oct. 19. The event, 6-8 p.m., will be held at the University Club, College Hall. The University Club requires jacket and tie for men and evening or business attire for women. UAlbany Assists with Katrina Relief
President Kermit L. Hall has established the Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund to assist victims of the disaster. All of the contributions collected from UAlbany faculty, students and staff – and matching funds provided by University Auxiliary Services – will be forwarded to the American Red Cross, the Northeast Regional Food Bank/America’s Second Harvest and other relief organizations. Donations will be accepted through Sept. 20.  Full story >>

Former MCI Senior Manager for Government Affairs Charles R. Williams has been named vice president for governmental affairs and public relations at UAlbany. Full story >>

U.S. Department of Education Funds UAlbany Alcohol Intervention Program
UAlbany has received a $295,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education to prevent high-risk drinking and violent behavior among college students. Titled Project First STEPS, the initiative will identify high-risk drinkers among first-year students through an online screening process conducted within the students’ first month at UAlbany, then follows a five-stage process to prevent high-risk behaviors. UAlbany Announces College of Computing and Information
UAlbany’s new College of Computing and Information will prepare the information technology workforce of tomorrow, advance scientific research and further the University’s partnerships with government and industry. The college will bring together students and faculty concerned with user enterprises; technology application, design and development; testing; verification; and scientific analysis. Full Story >>

Scholars, historians and others interested in the death penalty now have a comprehensive resource, thanks to the School of Criminal Justice: the National Death Penalty Archive (NDPA). The school’s Capital Punishment Research Initiative (CPRI) initiated the project to collect and document the history of capital punishment. Full Story >>

School of Education Joins National Just for the Kids Project
The School of Education has partnered with the New York State Business Council and the State of New York to create Just for the Kids-New York, part of a national Just for the Kids project. This study will help local schools get more from their state assessment results by identifying opportunities for improvement and learning from higher performing schools. Full Story >>

Social Welfare faculty attended the closing day of Rwanda’s annual three-month period of mourning for the 1994 genocide in which nearly one million Rwandans were killed. School of Social Welfare Faculty Focus on Partnership in Rwanda
Barbara Rio and Starr Wood from the School of Social Welfare spent two weeks in July in Rwanda assessing potential research projects and student service learning opportunities in the country. The Rwandan people and the new Rwandan government were eager to share their culture, personal stories and future dreams. Rio and Wood continue to communicate with officials in Rwanda and plan to return to the country next summer, hopefully accompanied by UAlbany students.

School of Social Welfare Faculty Receive Grants
Professor Carolyn Smith has won a grant of just over $1 million from the National Institute on Drug Abuse to study the long-term consequences of exposure to family violence. Assistant Professor Eric Hardiman has received a grant funded by the New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) to study consumer perceptions of care in mental health programs in New York City. The survey will collect baseline information in preparation for the future implementation of OMH’s Personalized Recovery Oriented Services Initiative, a collaborative endeavor between OMH, UAlbany's School of Social Welfare and the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

Jamar WilsonBasketball Season Tickets Now Available
Season tickets for the 2005-06 UAlbany basketball season are on sale now. You can purchase a combination season ticket for both the men's and women's home games starting at $75. Men’s basketball plays a 12-game home schedule that includes eight America East Conference opponents, plus non-league dates with Harvard and Cornell. Women’s basketball has 10 home games in 2005-06, including a match-up with Big East Conference foe Syracuse Dec. 20. For more information, call (518) 442-4683.

Athletic Hall of Fame Inductions To Be Held
The 2005 Athletic Hall of Fame Dinner & Induction will be held Oct. 7 at 6 p.m. The 2005 induction class includes Dr. Richard Hall, Joe Rajczak '80, Dan Gmelin '98, Rafaela Nikas '98 and Joe Savino '98. For more information on this event, contact Don Ostrom at (518) 437-4416.

UAlbany Veterans Project Celebrates Fourth AnniversaryUAlbany's Veterans Wall of Honor
Four years ago, the University unveiled its Veterans Wall of Honor, a nine-panel, 36-foot-long mural inscribed with the names of UAlbany servicemen and women. The wall now holds the names of more than 4,000 UAlbany alumni, students, faculty and staff. To learn more about the project or to check if your name is included, visit UAlbany’s Veterans Web site.
