SEPTEMBER 2004

UAlbany Asks You!

What advice would you give to incoming freshmen?
Share your thoughts with us, and we'll enter your name into a drawing for UAlbany merchandise.

HERE'S WHAT YOU SAID

FINEST MOMENT:
In the last issue, we asked you to tell us what you considered to be your finest moment at UAlbany. Thanks to all the alumni who wrote back to share their stories with us. Below are a couple of our favorite responses.

My finest moment was during my senior year. After struggling as a teen to find food and shelter, I didn't know what college was about. During my first year I came close to failing out. But I didn't. It took me the better part of my third year to finally learn how to study more efficiently. And when I received my first A's I was shocked and surprised at what I was capable of accomplishing.

But even that wasn't my shining moment. It came during my senior year. The year when I was voted in as the first elected President of the Latino Greek Council. …The year I received UAlbany's Spellman Outstanding Leadership Award. The year I was selected to be in Who's Who Among Students In American Colleges and Universities. The year I received the University President's Award for Greek Leadership. The year I changed my Sociology Minor into a Double Major during my last semester, and came through with flying colors. The year my elderly grandmother, my step-mom, my step-uncle and 3 of my closest friends drove 3 hours from NYC to see me walk down an aisle in a cap and gown.
My senior year was the year of my greatest accomplishments. Accomplishments that I had no idea were possible five years earlier. For me, Albany will always be the place where I learned that I can accomplish anything that I choose. Where limitations are just another goal to be achieved. -Marc A. Porrata ‘93

It was a cold, dry winter night as I left my class on the academic podium. I was walking back to my dorm on State Quad with small snowflakes swirling in the wind-tunnel air. Up ahead, I noticed a dark shape, but couldn't make it out. Slowing down my pace, I realized I was alone as far as I could see except for this shape up ahead. As the shape became clearer, I felt the shock of the realization that it was a man in a motorized wheelchair. I ran to him and called out his name. I will never forget the look of fear and relief on his face. We knew each other from State Quad. He explained that the battery died on his chair. I don't remember how long he had been there, but it was long enough to be dangerous because his body could not regulate his temperature. I will never forget the look on his face as we hurried back to the Quad and his dorm room where he lived with his brother. He told me I was "his angel."

There were many fond memories of my time at the University at Albany. That night was special because I had saved a life. I could have walked through the buildings above or the tunnels below to get back to my quad, but that wintry night was the kind I walked in growing up in Queens Village, New York. The clear air and star filled sky filled me with a familiar feeling of awe. And awe is what I felt when it was meant for me to find my friend. I was gifted that night.
