Officer in Charge Susan HerbstProvost Susan Herbst Appointed Officer in Charge
SUNY Chancellor John R. Ryan has appointed UAlbany Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Susan V. Herbst officer in charge of the campus. As officer in charge, Herbst has all of the authority and responsibility of a campus president. George M. Philip ’69, ’73, chair of the University Council, applauded the decision and noted the council will be organizing a national search for a permanent president in the coming weeks. Full story >>

Frank ThompsonFrank Thompson Named Acting Provost
Professor Frank J. Thompson, former dean of the Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy, will serve the University as acting provost from January to June 2007. Thompson will act as provost with regard to tenure and promotion, the recommendation of faculty hires, and the review of selective investment proposals from schools and colleges; he also will represent the University at ceremonial events on campus and throughout the region.

Joining in the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the SEFCU Arena were Director of Athletics Lee McElroy, SEFCU President Michael J. Castellana, UAlbany's Officer in Charge Susan Herbst, and SUNY Board of Trustees member Robert J. Bellafiore.SEFCU and UAlbany Forge 10-Year Partnership
SEFCU, the largest credit union in the Capital Region, and UAlbany announced a $2.75 million commitment to name the university's Recreation and Convocation Center for a 10-year period. The facility, to be known as the SEFCU Arena, is the home of UAlbany's men's and women's basketball teams. The SEFCU Arena will continue to expand its role as a major venue for community events, sporting events and university activities. The arena has seating for capacity crowds of 4,538.” Full story >>

Alumni Achievers Tell Their Stories
Four UAlbany alumni achievers, with very different interests and backgrounds but the same alma mater, came together at a special luncheon on campus Oct. 20 to share their life stories and launch a campaign that celebrates the successful career paths of UAlbany graduates. The campaign is designed to show all students how UAlbany helps lay the foundation of their success by giving them the tools to begin their self-discovery. It was standing room only at the Nov. 1 opening of UAlbany's Emeritus Center. The center, located in University Administration Building Room 134, is only the second emeritus center in the entire SUNY system; the first was created at the University of Buffalo many years ago. The center will serve as a gathering place for retired UAlbany faculty and professionals and is designed to facilitate interdisciplinary scholarship. Full story >>

While most students spend the Thanksgiving holiday at home with their families, international exchange students at UAlbany typically do not have time to go home and are often alone on Thanksgiving Day. Dean Katharine Briar-Lawson has announced the School of Social Welfare has attained its goal of raising $1 million in scholarship funding and has set a new goal of $3 million for support of students. The announcement came at a celebration last month of the school’s 40th anniversary, which was attended by more than 150 guests.

Business Professor and Alumnus Team Up To Win Finance Award
Associate Professor David Smith and School of Business alumnus William Desormeau Jr. MBA ’00 won second prize in the Financial Frontiers Award competition sponsored by the Colorado-based Financial Planning Association and the Janus Capital Group for their project “Optimal Rebalancing Frequency for Stock-Bond Portfolios.” The pair presented their research at the national conference of the Financial Planning Association in October.

School Opens Pathways Into Education Center
The first of its kind on the UAlbany campus, the Pathways Into Education (PIE) Center is a new way to assist students interested in School of Education programs. The center is now the central location for undergraduates and prospective students seeking information about and assistance with the undergraduate Education Studies Minor, teacher certification and graduate-level education programs. UAlbany Unanimously Chosen To Repeat As America East Basketball Champions
Coming off its first-ever conference championship and subsequent berth to the NCAA Tournament, UAlbany has been unanimously picked to win back-to-back America East men’s basketball titles, according to a vote of the league’s head coaches. The Great Danes received all eight possible first-place votes (coaches were not permitted to vote for their own teams) to pace the conference’s teams with 64 points. Full story >>

Big Purple GrowlMark Your Calendars for the 10th Annual Big Purple Growl & Ferocious Feast
The 10th annual Big Purple Growl and Ferocious Feast is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007. The event will feature a pregame party and feast followed by the women's and men's basketball double-header against Binghamton. Ticket information for the event will be available online later this month.

Retirement Celebration Scheduled for Jack Koelmel
Tickets are now available for a retirement dinner honoring longtime UAlbany athletic trainer Jack Koelmel. The dinner will take place Dec. 1 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in downtown Albany.
