Master of Fine Arts Candidates’ Work on Display at Art Museum
The University Art Museum is featuring the artwork of five UAlbany Fall 2005 Master of Fine Arts (MFA) candidates Dec. 2-18. The exhibit offers viewers an opportunity to see how emerging artists are addressing contemporary issues in the visual arts. Alumnus Norman E. Snyder Jr. Commits Largest Individual Gift in University's History
Rheingold Brewing chief and former South Beach Beverage Company (SoBe) partner Norman E. Snyder Jr. '83 has committed $5 million to UAlbany's School of Business to establish the Norman E. Snyder Jr. '83 Endowment Fund. The fund will be used for general support of the school's goal to become the leading public business school in the Northeast. Full story >>

UAlbany Opens New Cancer Research Center
The University's new Gen*NY*Sis Center for Excellence in Cancer Genomics officially opened its doors last month and unveiled its Wall of Memory and Hope. The $45 million facility is the cornerstone of New York State's Gen*NY*Sis (Generating Employment Through New York Science) program, a $500 million initiative in government and private investment that is attracting new life science industries to the state and making New York a leader in creating biotechnology jobs. UAlbany Launches Economic Forecasting Degree
UAlbany’s Department of Economics has implemented a new concentration in economic forecasting, offering both a professional master’s degree and an advanced certificate in the field. Distinguished Professor of Economics Kajal Lahiri secured two grants totaling $25,000 from the Council of Graduate Schools (CGS)/Ford Foundation to implement the program. Full Story >>
Center for Technology in Government to Create International Digital Government Research Community
UAlbany’s Center for Technology in Government (CTG) has received $1 million from the National Science Foundation's Digital Research Program to build and sustain an international digital government research community. Full Story >>
School of Education Partners with Albany City Schools in NYGEAR UP Program
With a $154,300 grant from NYGEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) the City School District of Albany will expand the services offered by the School of Education via the Community Service in Education class and the university work-study program. Participating students will work as after-school tutors for middle school students requiring additional college preparation. Full Story >>
Dean Frank Thompson to Step Down
Frank Thompson, dean of Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy, has announced he will leave the position in January 2006. Thompson will resume teaching and research as a full professor. Full Story >>
DOE Grant to Support Training of Nontraditional Students for Careers in Special Education
The Department of Educational and Counseling Psychology's Division of Special Education, in a joint effort with the Department of Reading, has received a $757,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education to support training needed to retain highly qualified and diverse candidates as they change their fields of employment to special education. School of Social Welfare Faculty Awarded Grant to Support Aging Initiatives
Victoria Rizzo, research assistant professor, will receive a portion of a $250,000 New York State grant to the Arthritis Foundation for a third year. The legislative allocation seeks to develop capacity to conduct disease management programs throughout the state. Rizzo will conduct the evaluation of the 2006-07 program.
School of Social Welfare Receives Retirement Community Development Grant
The School of Social Welfare has received a $144,000 grant from the New York State Office of the Aging for the Albany Naturally Occurring Retirement Community proposal. The school, in collaboration with community partners, will implement a supportive services program for older adults in the southwest quadrant of Albany. This is the first NORC award for Albany County. Zvi Gellis, an associate professor at the School of Social Welfare, will take a lead role in the project.

Individual Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tickets On Sale
Individual game tickets for both UAlbany men’s and women’s basketball programs are now on sale. Tickets may be purchased through the UAlbany ticket office at (518) 442-4683 or at the box office in the Physical Education Building, adjacent to the Recreation and Convocation Center, Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Season tickets also are still available.
Individual Game Prices: $20 Courtside, $9 Chairback, $7 Reserved
Season Ticket Prices: $200 Courtside, $125 Chairback, $75 Reserved (Includes both men’s and women’s games.) Half-price tickets available for Varsity Club members.
Big Purple Growl & Ferocious Feast Set
The ninth annual Big Purple Growl and Ferocious Feast is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006. The event will feature a pregame party and feast followed by the women's and men's basketball double-header against Boston University. Ticket information for the event will be available online next month.

UAlbany License Plates Show School Pride
New Yorkers can show their UAlbany pride with custom UAlbany license plates. Plates cost $34.50 with a $25 annual renewal fee (two-year minimum renewal) or $63 for a customized plate with a $50 annual renewal fee (two-year minimum renewal). Orders can be placed at any New York State Department of Motor Vehicles office, online at www.nysdmv.com or by calling 1-800-364-7528.
