UAlbany First Academic Institution in State Declared "StormReady" As part of a nationwide program to help communities prepare against the ravages of severe weather, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has designated UAlbany a StormReady community. UAlbany is the first university in New York to achieve StormReady status, and is the seventh university to achieve StormReady status in the nation. Details.

Campaign Update Currently, the Bold.Vision Campaign is at a total of $281 million. We are excited to announce that several additional regional kickoff events have been scheduled: Buffalo, NY, May 26; Rochester, NY, May 27; Philadelphia, PA, June 10; Raleigh, NC, June 15; and Chicago, IL, June 17. Additionally, plans are under way for an event in Long Island. Check the alumni calendar for more details.

UAlbany Expands Child Autism Program The Regional Center for Autism pilot program, a pioneering approach to serve the needs of children with autism, their parents and school professionals, expanded this fall from three to six counties and from 30 to 50 school districts. Developed and run by UAlbany's Center for Autism and Related Disabilities, the program grew to include school districts in Fulton, Montgomery and Schenectady counties. Details.

UAlbany Center for Jewish Studies Expands to Include Courses on Secular Judaism UAlbany has received a $50,000 grant through the Center for Cultural Judaism, supported by the Posen Foundation, to develop new courses related to the study of secular Jewish life and culture. The new courses will count toward the minor and/or major in Judaic Studies, part of the College of Arts and Sciences. Among the proposed courses are "Origins of Secular Jewish Life" and "Modern Yiddish Culture." Details.

Professor to Address Link Between Child Maltreatment and Outcomes. Dr. Carolyn Smith, UAlbany School of Social Welfare Associate Professor, will address new research on June 4 from the Rochester Youth Development Study on the links between child maltreatment, delinquency, and other youth outcomes. She also will highlight intergenerational sources of risk through pathways that include poor parenting and partner violence. The program is part of UAlbany’s Alumni Weekend, June 4-6. Study Reveals Garlic Oil an Environmentally Safe Bird Repellent Garlic oil shows significant activity as a nontoxic bird repellent for use against crop damaging birds, according to a joint study by UAlbany and the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia. The study was co-authored by Eric Block, Distinguished Chemistry Professor at UAlbany. Details.

Women’s Golf Captures First-Ever America East Conference Championship Diane Onofry fired an 88, the best round of the day, in leading UAlbany to the America East Conference Women’s Golf Championships May 4 at the Anderson’s Glen Course of the Blackledge Country Club in Connecticut. The Great Danes finished with a 36-hole score of 723, and won by 20 strokes over second-place Boston University.

11th Annual Golf Classic Set The 11th Annual Great Danes Scholarship Golf Classic will be held Monday, May 24, at Shaker Ridge Country Club in Loudonville, New York. Joins Us for Alumni Weekend Alumni Weekend is June 4-6! All classes are invited to return to the UAlbany campus to celebrate their past, with a special emphasis on the classes 1932-1969. A full weekend of events is planned, beginning with tours and class events on Friday. Saturday focuses on the uptown campus with presentations, tours and a MYSKANIA reunion. Sunday closes the weekend at the downtown campus with a farewell brunch and a soiree at Hawley Library.
