Weekend Is a Chance to Reconnect
Calling the classes of 1936-1966 (those years ending in one
and six) � Reconnect with fellow classmates and see all that
has changed at the University. The fun begins on Friday with
campus tours, an all-alumni wine tasting and the Gala Awards
Dinner.Saturday, enjoy an all-alumni luncheon, sorority/fraternity
coffee hours, programs and class get-togethers. On Sunday,

Alumni Association Annual Meeting
Scheduled
The UAlbany Alumni Association invites its members to attend
the annual All-Alumni Luncheon and Annual Meeting June 3,
2006, at noon on the Downtown Campus. Come and learn what
the association has accomplished in the past year and vote

Keep
the Great Danes Spirit Alive at Spring Stomp
Come to the UAlbany Spring Stomp April 29 at 6:30 p.m.! Be
there as UAlbany celebrates the grand opening of the John
Fallon Lacrosse Field. Cheer on our nationally ranked America
East lacrosse champions and three-time NCAA participant Great
Danes as they take on Binghamton at 7:00 p.m. The first 1,000
attendees receive a Great Danes drawstring bag! Alumni Association
members � preregister and receive a free hot dog and beverage!

Summer Literacy Institute Scheduled
Elementary and secondary instruction will be the focus of
the 2nd Annual School of Education Summer Literacy Institute
June 27-29 on the UAlbany campus. The program is open to teachers
and other school leaders. Keynote speakers are Richard Allington,
professor of education at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville
and president of the International Reading Association, and

Libraries Acquire Joseph Persico Papers
UAlbany has acquired the papers of Joseph E. Persico �52,
the best-selling author of Roosevelt's Secret War, Edward
R. Murrow: An American Original, The Imperial Rockefeller,
and co-author of former Secretary of State Colin Powell's
autobiography My American Journey, as well as other acclaimed
works of history and biography.

Niagara's Foundation Supports UAlbany Cancer Research Center
First Niagara's Foundation presented $50,000 March
29 to UAlbany's Gen*NY*Sis Center for Excellence in Cancer
Genomics. The funds will be used to purchase high-tech laboratory
equipment for genomics and biomedical sciences research. Full

Unveils New Downtown Sign
President Kermit L. Hall unveiled a new campus sign
for the University's downtown campus March 29, symbolizing
the first step of a $2.4 million initiative that will make
the University's three campuses welcoming and easy to find
and navigate. The University has set a goal of completing
the project in time for students' arrival for the fall 2006
semester.

MBA Students present at Eastern
Academy of Management
The Eastern Academy of Management has accepted a paper from
UAlbany MBA students, who won out over a group of working
professionals and doctorate candidates. It is unusual for
MBA work to be accepted. First-year students Chuck Quadrini,
Dan Peat and Kristen Harris will present �Globalization and
the Merck Pharmaceutical Company� at the EAM conference in
May.
Rockefeller
College�s Thomas Birkland Appointed to National Science Foundation
Thomas Birkland, an associate professor in the Department
of Public Administration and Policy in the Rockefeller College
of Public Affairs and Policy, has been appointed to serve
for one year as a program director at the National Science

College of Nanoscale Science
and Engineering and BeSang Inc. Embark On Joint 3D Memory
R&D Program
As part of a three-year program valued at $1.1 million, BeSang
Inc., a Portland, Ore. Start-up company, will use tools and
facilities at the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering�s
Albany NanoTech complex to enhance its 3D technology. "Through
access to the state-of-the-art facilities at Albany NanoTech,
we will be able to develop our 3D technology more quickly,
which will allow us to speed up its introduction in the marketplace,"
Sang-Yun Lee, CEO of BeSang, said in a statement.
Social Welfare Faculty Member
Zvi Gellis Selected for Governor's Council
Associate Professor Zvi Gellis, director of the Center for
Mental Health and Aging, has been appointed to Governor Pataki's
Interagency Planning Council for Geriatric Mental Health Services
in New York State. The New York State Office of Mental Health
and Office of the Aging will work collaboratively to develop
a strategic "aging friendly" mental health plan
for services to older New Yorkers.
Guggenheim
Foundation Honors UAlbany Professor
UAlbany professor of English and writer in residence Lynne
Tillman has been awarded a Fellowship from the John Simon
Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. The fellowships are awarded
to professionals who have demonstrated exceptional ability
by publishing a significant body of work in the fields of
natural sciences, social sciences, humanities and the creative

Grant Will Support Long Term
Health Care Initiatives
School of Social Welfare Assistant Professor Vicky Rizzo,
in partnership with the Center for Human Services Research,
has received a $200,000 grant from the New York State Department
of Health for a one-year project intended to further improve
the existing quality assurance/quality improvement process
by using direct feedback from care recipients and to pursue
system-wide changes that will benefit the entire long-term
home care population.

of Social Welfare Welcomes Peruvian Guest
The School of Social Welfare welcomed Professor Armando Meras,
director of the Office of Community Development and a faculty
member at Universidad Santo Toribio de Mogrovejo in Chiclayo,
Peru, on his second visit to UAlbany. Meras visited the school
to further collaborative initiatives with faculty, staff and
students and to discuss ways to implement the school�s programs
in Peru. School faculty and students will travel to Peru again
this summer.
School of Education Hosts Exchange
of International Scholars
Over the years, the School of Education has hosted numerous
visiting international scholars and students, helping to prepare
leaders who can facilitate educational reform in their native
countries and around the world. This academic year, the school
is pleased to host a remarkably large number of visiting scholars:
two Fulbright New Century Scholars and four Fulbright Students.

Golf Classic Supports Student-Athlete
Scholarships
The 13th Annual Great Danes Scholarship Golf Classic will
be held at Shaker Ridge Country Club in Albany, May 22. Proceeds
assist student-athletes in attaining their educational and
athletic pursuits through scholarship contributions. A similar
event is planned for Sept. 25 in Bethpage, N.Y.

Delaware,
Cornell, Lehigh and Fordham On Football Schedule
UAlbany�s 2006 football schedule has been announced, and includes
seven games against conference opposition. The non-league
schedule features 2003 national champion Delaware, a member
of the Atlantic 10 Conference, and a first-ever meeting with
Cornell. The Great Danes, who tied for third in the Northeast
Conference standings last year, open with consecutive Patriot
League opponents in Lehigh and Fordham. Full

Super Fan Featured on CBS
It wasn�t just the Great Danes who received national attention
during the recent NCAA basketball tournament. Senior Adam
Thorpe, a Great Danes super fan, was profiled during the Final
Four on CBS and its cable sister in a 30-second CSTV package
highlighting avid college basketball fans. The 6-foot-2, 250-pound
senior is a fixture at UAlbany basketball games. He paints
his face purple and gold, waves a giant UAlbany flag, and
runs laps around the court pumping up the fans. You can watch

March 31 marked the official close of the Alumni Association�s
2006 membership campaign, resulting in more than 250 new members.
