JUNE 2004

UAlbany Asks You!

What was the most exciting moment in the history of UAlbany sports?
Share your memories with us, and we'll enter your name into a drawing for UAlbany merchandise.

Here's what you said.

In the last issue, we asked you to send us your favorite memory of springtime at UAlbany. Thanks to all the alumni who wrote back to share their fond remembrances with us. Below are two of our favorite responses we wanted to share with you.

I remember as the weather got warmer we would take our books and sit out by the lecture centers to read. I would take off my shoes and sit with my feet in the fountain as I studied in the warm sun. I can still visualize the buds coming out on the (then much smaller) trees and hear the carillon chiming. It seemed like all life was emerging from hibernation. Thanks for the chance to reflect back. -Lisa Blanc Lonschein '77

I graduated in 1962 so my memories are focused around the dormitory quad – Brubacher, Sayles, Pierce and Waterbury Halls; and the "old" downtown campus – Draper, Hawley Library, Richardson, etc.

In the spring for some reason, whether it was the soil around the dorms and the academic buildings or it was the mulch the grounds people used; there was a very distinctive "earthy" smell that would pervade the campus, especially if it had rained, and it seemed it always rained in the spring in Albany !! Walking to class - and in those years, almost everybody walked – we would be so glad we were free of Albany's infamous snow banks, but had to face the "smell." What was that smell? Some clever wit composed this poem. I have no idea who, or when, but I still think of it in the spring and I smell nature's fertilizer:

"Spring has sprung,
The grass has ris;
I wonder what
That ODOR IS??"

Not many weeks after we pondered this, many of us would be sprawled on blankets and sheets on the grass in the dormitory quad – soaking up the sun and cramming for final exams. It was over 40 years ago – but the memories are still vivid and alive. Thanks Albany State for some great memories. -E. L. "Buzz" Welker '62
