President Hall Continues Cross Country Trek
President Kermit L. Hall will continue meeting with alumni across the country next month as he makes his way to Naples, Fla., March 14, and Long Island March 30. Within the past two months he has hosted alumni receptions in San Francisco; Phoenix; Washington, D.C.; and Raleigh. Additional events are being planned for the spring and summer.

Capital District Writing Project Summer Institute Accepting Applications
The Capital District Writing Project (CDWP) housed in the School of Education invites teachers to apply for the 2006 Summer Institute June 26-July 20. Along with a pre-institute retreat in May, the Summer Institute provides teachers the opportunity to renew their teaching and writing skills with study, reflection, discussion and plenty of writing. CDWP offers a $1,000 stipend to select teachers. Applications are due March 15. To learn more or to apply, visit www.albany.edu/cdwp/.

University Art Museum Holds Two Exhibitions
The University Art Museum is sponsoring two exhibitions through April 9. The Space Between Us features video, paintings, drawings and site-specific installations by nine artists who explore a range of spatial circumstances inspired by familiar interiors and the surrounding architecture. Inaugural Scholarship Fund Names First Recipients
Jeffrey Castillo of Manhattan; Zakhar (Zack) Berkovich of Staten Island; Jessica Gunsch of Pleasant Valley, N.Y.; and Sheila Gaddy of Albany, N.Y., have been named the first recipients of awards from the University's Inaugural Scholarship Fund. Established by President Kermit L. Hall when he took office in February 2005, the Inaugural Scholarship Fund provides need- and merit-based undergraduate student scholarships. Full story >>

New Signage Planned for UAlbany Campuses
UAlbany President Kermit L. Hall took a chainsaw recently to the old UAlbany sign on the downtown campus, clearing the way for the University's initiative to install new signage campuswide. The University has embarked on a $2.4 million project to replace exterior signs on its three campuses with signage that is accessible, easy to read for the campus community and visitors, and complementary to the University's architecture.

Derrick Darby, associate professor of philosophy and humanities at Texas A&M University, was the keynote speaker at the 27th annual Martin Luther King Jr./Black History Month luncheon at UAlbany Feb. 9. Dippikill Celebrates 50th Years
Alumni have come from as far away as Hawaii, Germany and Japan to enjoy this wilderness retreat owned and operated by UAlbany’s Student Association. The 853-acre retreat is located in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains about 70 miles north of Albany. Attendance has nearly doubled in the past decade, to 5,200 overnight guests in 2004. Siena-UAlbany Connection Unites Business Students in CPA Quest
UAlbany and Siena College have put their basketball rivalry aside to form a strategic partnership between their business schools. Siena's undergraduate school of business and UAlbany's graduate school of business developed an agreement to help students obtain a fifth year of accounting for Certified Public Accounting licensure required under a 1998 amendment to New York's Education Law. University-Community Collaborations Mutually Beneficial
The benefits of university-community collaborations were highlighted at January’s annual meeting of the School of Social Welfare Community Advisory Committee and the Subcommittee on Strategic Partnerships. SSW Dean Katharine Briar-Lawson, faculty and distinguished guests reviewed programs such as Elder Prepared Community Building, Reinventing Retirement, Schools as Hubs of Intergenerational Family Supports, and Diversity Initiatives in the Capital Region.

School of Education Announces Four New Scholarships
The School of Education has announced four new scholarships, bringing the total of named and endowed awards to 15. These awards provide funding to more than 40 students each year. The new scholarships are:
• The Class of 1955 Award for students pursuing a career in teaching
• The Dr. Kimberly E. Esterman Memorial Award for students working in the Middle Earth Peer Assistance Program and pursuing a graduate program in counseling psychology
• The Anna Maria Bonaventura Memorial Scholarship Fund for students with a demonstrated interest in teaching English as a second language
• The James Ryan Northeast Career Planning Scholarship for second year master’s students in the Rehabilitation Counseling program

Distinguished Downtown Campus Faculty Honored
President Kermit L. Hall joined the downtown campus deans for a portrait unveiling ceremony Feb. 1 to honor faculty in the School of Social Welfare, the School of Criminal Justice, Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy, and the College of Computing and Information. Faculty members were recognized as Collins Fellows, Distinguished Professors, Distinguished Teaching Professors and Distinguished Service Professors. These honors represent superior performance and continued and dedicated service to the University.

School of Business and Rockefeller College Collaborate on Norsk Hydro Research Project
The Security Dynamics Network, an international, by-invitation-only consortium of scholars of information and cyber-security, met at UAlbany in January. As part of this effort combining academic and practical research, School of Business Assistant Professor Eliot Rich is working with Rockefeller College Professor David Anderson on a Norsk Hydro research project funded by the Norwegian Research Council. Norsk, a Fortune 500 energy supplier, is transitioning the management of its oil platforms from the sea to the shore. The project will help ensure the security of these remote sites.

Alums To Gather in Albany and New York City as UAlbany Competes in BracketBusters Tournament
UAlbany will travel to Colonial Athletic Association opponent Virginia Commonwealth Feb. 17 for the BracketBusters Tournament, a 13-game men’s basketball event matching NCAA tournament hopefuls against each other. ESPNU, a 24-hour college sports network, will televise the contest. Two great places for UAlbany alums to watch the game: Across the Street Pub in Albany and Standings Bar at 43 East 7th St between Second Avenue and Bowery in New York City. Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams Prepare for America East Championships
Binghamton University's Event Center will host the 2006 America East Men's Basketball Championship for the second consecutive year March 3-5. The first round, quarterfinals and semifinals will be played March 3, 4 and 5, respectively, with the title game played March 11 at the home of the highest remaining seed. For the fifth straight season, the America East Women's Basketball Championship will take place at the University of Hartford's Chase Arena March 9-12.
