Kirmit Hall Named New UAlbany President
Following the recommendation of Chancellor Robert L. King, the State University of New York Board of Trustees approved the nomination of Kermit L. Hall, head of Utah State University, as the University at Albany’s 17th president. Hall has been president and professor of history of Utah State University since 2000 and previously served as the provost and vice president for academic affairs and professor of history at North Carolina State University. College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering Awards World's First Ph.D. Degrees in Nanocale Science
The College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering of UAlbany – the first college devoted to the study of nanoscale scientific concepts – awarded the world’s first Ph.D. degrees in nanoscience in December. Nanotechnology involves manipulating matter at the atomic scale and holds great promise for innovation in such fields as chip making, fuel cell development, drug delivery and sensor technology.

USAID Awards UAlbany $17 Million to Bolster Democracy in Lebanon
The Center for Legislative Development at UAlbany has been awarded a three-year, $17 million grant from the United States Agency for International Development to continue its efforts to strengthen municipal institutions in Lebanon and increase their effectiveness in support of democracy. Middle Earth Students Win National Awards in Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention
UAlbany’s Middle Earth peer counseling students received national honors for their work in alcohol and drug prevention at the BACCHUS and GAMMA Peer Education Network National Conference in November. UAlbany won a total of four awards, more than any of the other 87 competing colleges and universities. In addition, two UAlbany students were elected to national office. School of Social Welfare to Apply Information Technology in Children and Family Services
Through a collaborative funding arrangement with the New York State Office of Children and Family Services, the School of Social Welfare will be one of the first schools of social work in the nation to adopt informatics and information technology to provide models for application and development of human services. A new faculty member is being recruited to help advance the school’s evidence-based agenda and practice research initiatives. School of Education to Produce Web-Based Literacy Materials for High School English Teachers
The School of Education’s Center on English Learning & Achievement (CELA) has received a $150,000 grant from the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations to provide Web-based professional development materials to high school English teachers. The award will be used to adapt for high school English teachers a Web-based literacy guide produced by CELA for teachers at the middle school level. Get Ready to Rock the RACC at the 8th Annual Big Purple Growl & Ferocious Feast Feb. 5. Enjoy an evening of Great Danes basketball, fabulous food, games and prizes. Prior to the game, mingle in the University Gym with fellow alumni at the Ferocious Feast, which features a new menu, lower pricing, lots of giveaways and a Puppy Pound loaded with entertainment for kids.

Tour New Life Sciences Research Building
Tour the newest building on the UAlbany campus – the Life Sciences Research Building. The 194,000-square-foot facility supports interdisciplinary research groups exploring the basic scientific mechanisms that underlie the cause and address the cure of disease. Join the Alumni Association Feb. 16 for breakfast and networking, followed by a tour and presentation led by Albert Millis, professor and chair of the Department of Biological Sciences. Hudson Mohawk Education Expo Announced
The School of Education invites all 2004 and 2005 UAlbany graduates to interview with representatives from school districts across the state and nation at the Hudson Mohawk Education Expo 2005. The event will be held at the Empire State Convention Center in Albany March 30-31. In preparation for the Expo, the School of Education will run a Resume Writing Workshop on campus January 18. Art Museum Announces Spring 2005 ACT Schedule
