New York City Lecture Series: Emma Lazarus’ Double Life
Mark your calendar for April 29 and join the UAlbany Alumni Association and Center for Jewish Studies at the Jewish Heritage Museum in New York City to hear from biographer Esther Schor about the life of Emma Lazarus. After the presentation, join alumni for a reception. Be sure to leave time in your schedule to view the museum’s Emma Lazarus exhibition. Registration will open in mid-February. Welcome UAlbany Washington Semester Program Students to D.C.!
You are invited to mingle with alumni and current UAlbany Washington Semester Program students Feb. 24, 6-8 p.m., at Tortilla Coast, 400 First St., SE. The Washington Semester Program is an integral part of the Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy's Department of Political Science. Students have the opportunity to meet political leaders, get an inside view of government and develop tools they will need to launch a successful career in any field. Light refreshments and a cash bar will be provided. Register online.

Material Occupation to Open at University Art Museum
Drawing on a wide range of materials and references, artists Caetano de Almeida, Sarah Crowner, Josh Faught, Elana Herzog, Marietta Hoferer, Sam Moyer, Anja Schwörer, and Melissa Thorne apply a keen eye and a steady hand as they transform paper, thread, old and newly woven fabric, and other ordinary materials into poetic abstract forms. The exhibition will run Feb. 7-April 7 and will include an artist’s reception Feb. 7. Details.

Short Plays & Skirmishes Debuts
The Department of Theatre, Theatre Alumni Affinity Group, Theatre Council and the UAlbany Alumni Association present Short Plays & Skirmishes, three short one-act plays written by Joseph Travers ’82.  The Proxy, Within These Garden Walls and Sanctuary will be presented as partially staged readings directed by David Lane, with fight sequences staged by Joseph Travers. Short Plays & Skirmishes will be performed Feb.10, 7 p.m., and Feb. 11, 1 p.m., in the Performing Arts Center Studio Theatre. Tickets are $5 at the door and will help fund Theatre Alumni Affinity Group activities. Call (518) 442-4200 for more information.

President Philip Comments on Governor Cuomo's State of the State Address
“Governor Cuomo's State of the State address captured the essence of SUNY's importance to the State of New York. In addition to the funding opportunities for SUNY’s four university centers in last year’s landmark NYSUNY 2020 Challenge Grant Act, the governor’s extension of the challenge grant program to the other 60 SUNY campuses in 2012-13 underscores the critical role that SUNY plays in driving academic excellence, research and technology innovation, and economic revitalization across the state. We congratulate Governor Cuomo on a historic year and look forward to his continued support as a key advocate for education in New York State.”

SUNY Chancellor Lays Out Agenda for 2012
Boosting graduation rates, reducing the need for remedial education and expanding online course offerings and paid internships are some of the areas the State University of New York will focus on this year, Chancellor Nancy Zimpher said during her 2012 State of the University Address
Jan. 9.  "Chancellor Zimpher's plan for the future of SUNY emphasizes streamlined resources, improved technology, and increased accountability, said UAlbany President George Philip ’69, ’73. “She charts an ambitious course that reaffirms the relevance of the University at Albany's central mission of excellence, affordability, and greater access to education.”

SEED Program Provides Business Training and $385K in Microloans to Local Entrepreneurs
In just six months, UAlbany's Small Enterprise Economic Development (SEED) program has invested $385,000 in the Capital District and created 52 new jobs. This unique job-creation partnership linking UAlbany, SEFCU and Empire State Development is the Capital Region's first character-based microloan program.  Details.

Society for Human Resource Management Recognizes UAlbany M.B.A.
The Society for Human Resource Management, the world’s largest association devoted to human resource management, has renewed its endorsement of the School of Business Human Resource Information Systems (HRIS) specialization. UAlbany offers the only M.B.A. program in the nation to broadly integrate technology into a human resource (HR) curriculum. For more than 25 years, the school has prepared HR and HRIS professionals for leading positions in Fortune 500 companies, consulting firms and small business.

NanoCollege to Partner on Nanochip Anti-Counterfeiting Program
UAlbany’s College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering and Long Island-based Applied DNA Sciences Inc. have announced a partnership to enable nanotechnology-driven innovations that would play a critical role in preventing the counterfeiting of computer chips. The collaboration initially targets the $20 billion defense industry chip market and has the potential to impact nanoelectronics and aerospace markets well in excess of $300 billion. Details.

Small Business Development Center and NYSERDA Offer No-Cost Energy Savings Reviews
The New York State Small Business Development Center at UAlbany, in partnership with the New York State Energy Development Authority (NYSERDA), is starting the new year by providing no-charge energy audits for small business owners to improve their operating efficiency. Audits will review lighting, HVAC systems, controls and conservation measures. Details.

Students Present Information Technology Recommendations to State CIOs
A team of UAlbany students from Associate Professor Theresa Pardo's public administration class presented recommendations to New York State Acting Chief Information Officer Daniel C. Chan and CIOs from several state agencies on two important information technology issues: cloud computing and the use of personal devices in the workplace. Pardo pursued the opportunity with Chan to challenge her students to research and recommend ways that emerging information technologies can be leveraged by state government. Details.

Collier Named Inaugural Sanford H. Levine Fellow
Department of Educational Administration and Policy Studies (EAPS), School of Education, and University at Albany faculty and staff gathered Dec. 8 with Mrs. Margaret Levine, Dr. D. Bruce Johnstone, and friends to celebrate the announcement of the first Sanford H. Levine Fellow, doctoral candidate Mary Beth Collier. Family, friends and colleagues established this fellowship to support doctoral candidates in EAPS in memory of Professor Sanford Levine, who spent more than 20 years teaching in the department. School of Social Welfare Students Travel to New Orleans
Eight master of social work students and Social Welfare faculty advisor Dr. Loretta Pyles traveled to New Orleans on a service learning trip in January, the sixth trip since Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans in 2005. The students assisted with ongoing recovery efforts, volunteering for the St. Bernard Project, New Orleans City Mission, and Green Light New Orleans.  The students also focused their efforts on critically analyzing post-disaster social policies related to housing, education and health/human services.


ATHLETICS

John Battaglino Honored as Lacrosse Magazine's Best Women's Coach of 2011
After a record-breaking 2011 women's lacrosse season for the Great Danes, head coach John Battaglino garnered numerous coaching awards, including the recently announced Lacrosse Magazine Best Women's Coach of 2011. Lacrosse Magazine chose Battaglino for both his outstanding first season at the helm and for working with a minuscule, injury-plagued roster. Details.

Fifty-Seven Student-Athletes Named to America East Academic Honor Roll
UAlbany had 57 student-athletes named to the America East Conference Fall 2011 Academic Honor Roll. Among that number were 31 student-athletes who earned Commissioner's Honor Roll status. UAlbany was led by field hockey and women's soccer; each had 12 team members on the honor roll. The women's soccer team and the men's cross country squad had seven student-athletes earning Commissioner's Honor Roll accolades. Details.

Softball Announces 2012 Season
UAlbany will begin the season with three non-conference tournaments that include the Eagle Classic, hosted by Georgia Southern; adidas Invitational, hosted by Winthrop University; and the Cherry Blossom Classic, hosted by George Mason. UAlbany will then return to New York to host 13 games on eight dates at Albany Field before ending the season on the road against rival Stony Brook in the program's quest for back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances and its fifth in eight years. UAlbany Football Finishes Season Ranked on Two National FCS Polls
The UAlbany football program finished up the 2011 season ranked on two national polls and was receiving votes in a third. The Great Danes were voted 23rd in the Football Championship Subdivision Coaches Poll and 21st in the Any Given Saturday FCS Poll. UAlbany also finished up the season receiving votes in the Sports Network Media Poll. Details.

Layton Named 2011 ECAC Football Championship Subdivision Special Team All-Star
Sophomore punter Paul Layton was named a 2011 ECAC Football Championship Subdivision Special Team All-Star. Layton, who will be recognized at the Eastern College Football Awards Banquet presented Feb. 16, finished the season sixth among the nation's punting leaders with a 42.6 average. He booted 17 kicks of 50 or more yards this season and was named the Great Danes' Most Valuable Special Teams Player. Layton was named to the Northeast Conference First Team and was the league's Special Teams Player of the Week on two occasions. Details.

Helping Local
Flood Victims

When flooding from Hurricane Irene ravaged the small upstate New York rural community of Schoharie in 2011, UAlbany students were there to lend a hand. Floodwaters from Schoharie Creek ripped through century-old homes, knocked over silos, upended SUVs and spread wreckage over a vast area in August. The cleanup was still ongoing in November when
a busload of UAlbany students arrived to lend a hand by clearing debris from a cornfield.
