Come join the party as the Big Purple Growl & Ferocious Feast celebrates its tenth anniversary. The event features a pregame party in the University Gym Feb. 3, 2007, as well as a women's and men's basketball double-header against the Binghamton Bearcats in the SEFCU Arena (formerly the RACC). new york knicksNYC Chapter Plans Trip to See the New York Knicks
Join the UAlbany NYC Chapter at the Jan. 24 game pitting the New York Knicks against the Phoenix Suns at Madison Square Garden. Tickets are in the 300 section and cost $47 for Alumni Association members and $52 for nonmembers. The game begins at 7:30 pm. Gather before the game at Tir Na Nog, 5 Penn Plaza, 8th Ave. at 33rd St. Register online, and be sure to wear your purple and gold!

Alumni to Gather in LA and Phoenix
The UAlbany Alumni Association invites you and a guest to join alumni from all SUNY schools at two regional events this January. Los Angeles-area alumni will gather Jan. 23 and Phoenix-area alumni are invited to a reception Jan. 25. For details, visit the University Web calendar. The registration deadline is Jan. 3.

shanghai skylineUAlbany Launches Study Abroad Short Courses in China
UAlbany is launching Study Abroad short courses at East China Normal University (ECNU) in Shanghai as part of its emerging exchange. Interim Vice Provost for International Education Ray Bromley noted, “Our late president, Kermit L. Hall, was tremendously enthusiastic about strengthening our institutional links with Chinese universities, and especially with ECNU, a top-tier institution in a tremendously dynamic city.” Full story >>

UAlbany continues to draw greater numbers of international students to its cosmopolitan campus. There are 1,067 international students on campus this academic year, 61 more than last year, an increase of 6 percent, according to Peg Reich, director of International Student Services in the Office of International Education. The total number of countries represented has grown to 96, up from 84 last year. Full story >>

Straussman, Wyckoff, Nathan Named to Spitzer’s Transition Team
Jeffrey Straussman, James Wyckoff and Richard Nathan have been named to the transition team of Governor-elect Eliot Spitzer. Straussman, dean of the Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy, was named to the Labor and Workforce Development Policy Advisory Committee. Wyckoff, professor of Public Administration, Public Policy, and Economics, was named to the Education Policy Team. Nathan, co-director of the Rockefeller Institute and a Distinguished Professor of Political Science and Public Policy, was named to the Government Reform Policy Team. Full story >>

Beverly Guy-Sheftall to visit UAlbany in Spring 2007.Women’s Studies at UAlbany Celebrates 35 Years
The Department of Women’s Studies kicked off a year-long celebration of its 35th anniversary last month. Upcoming events include a faculty exhibit of the department’s history through the College of Arts and Sciences and a Women's History Month lecture by renowned feminist scholar Beverly Guy-Sheftall in Spring 2007. Dr. James Castracane will lead CNSE's research team.Scientists at CNSE and Einstein Receive Major Grant to Develop World's Smallest Cancer Detection Device
Researchers at UAlbany’s College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering and at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University will collaborate on a study of tumor “microenvironments,” where tumors interact with surrounding tissues, cells and chemicals in ways that all too often encourage cancer cells to invade other areas of the body in the process known as metastasis. The research is funded by a $2 million grant from the National Cancer Institute. Full story >>

School of Business Connects with Russian Institutions
This fall, School of Business Dean Paul Leonard and Assistant Dean Linda Krzykowski visited Albany’s sister city, Tula, Russia, as part of the Albany-Tula Alliance’s search for potential collaborations. Connections were established and planning started for a student-to-student project linking UAlbany with Tula State University and Tolstoy Pedagogical University. Leonard said, “Students could work on improving processes for Russian companies that would like to do business in the United States. They understand about being entrepreneurs and starting businesses and are hungry for knowledge.” Full story >>

The Nelson A. Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy honored five distinguished alumni and friends at its annual recognition ceremony in November. This year’s recipients were Lawrence J. Korb, Ph.D. '69, Distinguished Alumnus Award in Political Science; Anne McCartt, Ph.D. ’88, Distinguished Alumna Award in Public Administration; Frank J. Mauro, Distinguished Service Award; Laurie N. DiPadova-Stocks, Ph.D. '95, Extended Learning Leadership Award; and Jennifer Givner, MPA '02, Young Alumni Award. Full story >>

The Elder Network of the Capital Region, based at UAlbany’s School of Social Welfare, will receive $800,100 in state funding to establish programs to create sustainable, aging-prepared communities which will serve as models to augment New York’s long-term care policy reform initiatives. Elder Network is a partnership between UAlbany and the New York State Office for the Aging and encompasses Albany, Rensselaer, Saratoga and Schenectady counties. America EastAmerica East Men’s Basketball Championship Tickets On Sale
Tickets to the 2007 America East Men’s Basketball Championship at Agganis Arena March 2-4 are now on sale. Ticket packages can be purchased at the Agganis Arena ticket office at [email protected] or by calling (617) 353-GoBU or through TicketMaster at TicketMaster.com or by calling (617) 931-2000. Packages for all seven games are $60 for adults and $30 for youth 10 and under or students (with a valid ID from an America East institution). The championship begins with a first round game March 2 at 7 p.m. Quarterfinal rounds will be played March 3 and semifinal games are slated for March 4.

Track and Field Great Dane Classic Set
Come cheer on the UAlbany men’s and women’s Track and Field team Jan. 19 at the NYC Armory as they compete in both women’s and men’s 200m, 400m, 800m, 3000m and mile races. The men’s team is picked to finish first while the women’s team has been chosen to finish second in the America East conference. Admission is $10 for spectators. Preregister online.

The UAlbany Reading Project provides an opportunity for all members of the UAlbany community to read the same book, and then participate in discussion groups and other activities focused on the book’s themes. The 2006-07 Campus Book is Elizabeth Kolbert's Field Notes from a Catastrophe: Man, Nature, and Climate Change,
which seeks to
deepen our collective understanding of the environment from political, cultural, economic and scientific perspectives.

The Capital Region Chapter has already scheduled a book discussion on Feb.13 with a book distribution event set for Jan. 9 at the Alumni House.
